What travellers are saying
- JohnGreenbackville, VA1 contributionFor many years we drove past this museum that is next to Dover AFB on Rt-1, but never stopped. Yesterday we decided to visit. We met up with John, our tour guide who spent more than 3 hours with us and showed us most of the planes on exhibit with terrific descriptions and history behind each plane. Definitely going back to revisit and pickup what we missed. Special thanks to our tour guide who was fantastic.Written 14 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The property is a great stop while visiting historic Dover. It is a great companion to the legislative house just across the green. Highly recommend a visit to the Old Statw House.Written 2 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Road43075044717Newburgh, NY4 contributionsSaw a historic site sign on the road and decided to follow it to this plantation. Glad I did! Learned about a man who didn't sign the declaration of independence because he thought we weren't ready, but then fought for it anyway. I also liked how they acknowledged the enslaved people and how, when and why he eventually freed them.Written 25 March 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - TMMMaryland9 contributionsI’ve been driving past this museum for way too many years! We always passed at times it was not open because we were passing thru to go to or come from the beach. Somehow I saw they were having an exhibit of work by 3 generations of the Wyeths of the Brandywine Valley and I knew I had to get there. I had never seen an NC Wyeth illustration from the golden age of illustration and this traveling exhibit was my opportunity to do so,in addition to work by his son Andrew Wyeth and grandson Jamie Wyeth. The exhibit was terrific and did not disappoint. My real eye opener was the Biggs Museum itself. It is a gem of Delaware! There’s a fabulous collection of original handmade early American furniture and American Art with inclusions of art by local Delaware artists. The Biggs provided a lovely 3-4 hour immersion into the art world for art lovers, dilettantes, and the curious.
My absolutely favorite piece at the museum is an outstanding piece of modern sculpture titled “Aloft (2015)” by an artist Erica Loustau from West Chester, PA. It had me standing in awe to fully understand the power of the image and its construction. A wow wow wow sculpture for me! It’s outside and inside the building!
The Biggs was a lovely way to spend the day!Written 6 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I have been coming here with my family from D.C. almost every summer when I was in elementary school. The hotel rooms would be so clean and fresh. There were so many activities to choose from. Even though I wasn't old enough to go to the casino, my Aunt Janie would always bring me back those chocolate chip cookies they serve there. It was truly a wonderful experience to share with my family. I haven't been here since due to travel costs but a lot has changed in these past few years. Customer service has trouble in welcoming residents and the casino is misleading some customers with its free offerings. Despite the few setbacks Dover Downs has experience over the years, I hope to come back again in the near future with my family and/or friends!Written 2 April 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Lawrence SPorto, Portugal13 contributionsWe greatly enjoyed our guided tour of the First State Heritage park, the central historic district of Wilmington, Delaware. Rachel, our guide, provided a very comprehensive overview of the historical sites and the many interesting men and women who contributed to the story of Delaware. Highly recommended!Written 6 May 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- ShannonDover, DE79 contributionsLook like they have a big close room that you can research but you have to ask a worker to open it for you. They do have a small exhibit and it was WW2 when I went thereWritten 21 October 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - RoseNew Hampshire1 contributionGrowing up in Delaware you don't get to do much but when Spence's bazaar is open thats where I normally like to go just for the atmosphere.
Outside it can be a 50/50 trip since some people go for the buying of items that have deals (hats, shirts, jackets cards and even furniture) while others are there for locally grown vegetables. Sometimes its crowded but other times noone is outside or walking around. It looks empty at times.
Once you step inside of the building however it gets very BUSY. It's a farmers market after all. Everyone wants homemade foods made by the Amish and even local places. My favorite thing is the Cinnamon buns. It's like a perfect in-between of C.Bun and a honeybun, sticky and sweet with just enough glaze over the top.
Another good thing is the porkchop sandwiches. I remember going there with my grandmother to share one every weekend. A beautifully crusted outside, a juicy inside that melts in your mouth. But if thats not your cup of water they do sell a lot of cheesecake as well. =)
Just remember its only open three days a week.Written 12 March 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We all owe much support and appreciation to those in law enforcement.(Despite my ticket in DE years ago!) LOL. - Rick J1 contributionHi, I am a local who in his teen years was an Usher at the Capitol Theatre for three years. My name is Rick L. Johnson. I was an entry level usher in 1978 from the assistance of my best friend and local hero Gerald W. Mayan who also worked there and was killed in an Osprey Aircraft testing accident several years ago now. It was a great job and experience and each time an employee was needed, our boss would get us to see if we had another "friend" that he could hire. Consequently, we had about five teenage High School friends all working there. Times change but those days were the best. To the point now. I have recently researched, written and yes even published now, a book on certain enlightenment I have received, "There Is A Doorway" and I am pursuing a book launch locally in the very near future. Hoping to stir some interest with this explorative post. Anyone..?Written 23 January 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
