Arriving at Grantley Adams International Airport

The Grantley Adams International Airport serves the island of Barbados and is a hub for tourism in the Eastern Caribbean. Located on the south-eastern end of the island, it is 13km from the capital of Bridgetown. The airport boasts facilities to enhance your travelling experience. There is free Wi-Fi access, an exchange bureau, an inbound duty free shop and a tourist information kiosk. All visitors need to be in possession of a valid passport and a return ticket. After your flight to Bridgetown has landed, you will present documents at Immigration, pick up your bags at the baggage reclaim and proceed through Customs. 

Transportation in and Around Bridgetown

Should your airfare to Bridgetown include a connection you will have to go to the departure terminal and check-in with the airline. If you are interested in touring the island there are many ways of getting around. Renting a vehicle is expensive, however, when purchasing your ticket to Bridgetown it is wise to book a rental vehicle online, as rates can be significantly lower. Motorcycles and mopeds are also available and all drivers must have a local drivers permit. Bicycling is a fun way to see the island as the public transport is not very reliable and often very crowded.

Buy a ticket to Bridgetown especially in the winter months and enjoy the best of Barbados' white sandy beaches, however, if you get tired of soaking up the sunshine, a visit to Harrison Cave is very cooling. This crystalline limestone cavern with spectacular stalactites and stalagmites created by flowing crystal streams is a must see. The Jewish synagogue built in the 17th century and presently beautifully restored as well as being an active synagogue, is spectacular with its gothic arches and offers another way to beat the heat. If you purchased your flight to Bridgetown to visit the two Jacobean mansions, St. Nicholas Abbey located in the parish of St. Peter and Drax Hall in the parish of St George, you will not be disappointed.

Shopping, Dining and Nightlife

Hopefully you have travelled on a cheap flight to Bridgetown as dining out in Barbados is expensive. The restaurants range from world-class joints like Champers, the Fish Pot and Cobblers' Cove, to local eateries like Bubba's Beach Bar. Every Friday night the town of Oistins welcomes its visitors with music and local culinary delights including fried fish and bammy, both of which are reasonably priced and very tasty. 

St. Lawrence Gap or ‘The Gap' is famous for lively nightlife and good shopping. Try the Reggae Lounge and you will be checking your next available Bridgetown flight to experience a repeat performance. The Whistling Frog's party night is a great way to dance the night away. For a sampling of Barbadian culture “Bajan Roots and Rhythms” is a dinner and stage show not to be missed.
