Arriving at Puerto Vallarta

After searching for cheap flights to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, online or through a travel agent, you'll find yourself touching down at Gustavo Diaz International, an airport that hosts all major traveller facilities including Wi-Fi access, information kiosks, food and beverage outlets and shops. ATM's and money change are also available in the airport.

Things to look out for are official looking people who will try to sell you timeshares, beware or you could end up at a four hour presentation, and also beware of credit card deals on the phone boxes, as they are very expensive. Taxis and minibuses are available for the six mile trip to Puerto Vallarta.

Getting Around Puerto Vallarta

Getting around in Puerto Vallarta can be something of an experience, and unless you're used to the roads and traffic here, it is best to leave the driving to someone else. For an amusing and enlightening journey around this colourful Mexican city, there is an extensive local bus service. The buses are privately owned by the drivers, and will often sport the name of the driver's children on the back, but if you don't know the local area well, make sure you know exactly where you want to go.

There are comfortable buses available for long distance trips, but if you just want to get around town easily, there are plenty of taxis to be found. Water taxis and pangas (small boats) can be used to travel to private beaches and other exotic locations.

Main Attractions in Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta has a wide range of exciting tourism options, from seasonal whale watching tours (from November to April), to hiking or cycling around the many trails the gorgeous coastline on offer. For extreme fun you could go skydiving, drive on a jungle safari, or take a horseback ride in the beautiful and rugged Sierra Madre mountain range.

Although, it isn't for everyone, there are traditional bullfights at the Toro Plaza bullring, or if you'd prefer to entertain the kids, the Splash Aquatic Park has plenty to keep them busy for an afternoon. There are also great deep-sea fishing charter tours available, or if you'd prefer to see them up-close, try a snorkelling or diving tour. Shopping, Dining and Nightlife

Next to the Rio Cuale you'll find Puerto Vallarta's main flea market, selling a wide range of items, though there are many colourful shops dotted around the city that deal in local art and cultural items. Another flea market on the river is a great place to shop, but be prepared to learn the phrase "No, Gracias' when you're being followed by relentless salesmen. Cuale River Island is home to many small boutiques and great restaurants well worth the visit.

The Rhythms of the Night tour will give you a taste of traditional Mexican nightlife, and is highly recommended, if you can't find something to do in one of the many nightclubs and bars that are located in downtown Puerto Vallarta.
