The Cozumel International Airport serves as the main hub for Cozumel flights. This small, yet highly useful facility situated on the Caribbean coastline provides flights to and from the Mexican mainland and several international destinations. To get cheap flights to Cozumel, it is best to take a connecting flight from Cancun Airport, which takes around 15 minutes. Airfare to Cozumel coming from Cancun only costs $75 (USD). Airport minibuses offer transport to some of the popular hotels and resorts approximately 4 km away. Alternatively, taxis wait in line a short distance away to provide more convenient transport to passengers with more or heavier luggage.
When visiting the different parts of the island, you can either take a taxi or hire a car. Jeepneys usually cost around $20, while cars cost around $55 a day. If you are not planning on covering a wide area in a day, you can simply hire a taxi for around $2 or $3. If you plan on hiring a ride at a car rental agency, never hire a scooter unless you have experience. Most of the accidents caused by tourists are related to scooters. Hence, do not think you know how to drive it if you haven't had any experience yet.
The area is famous for its beaches and underwater adventures. Get a scuba diving experience at Palancar Reef, but first choose a good dive shop to provide you with the swimming gear necessary. Alternatively, visit the Chankanaab National Park and enjoy swimming with the dolphins at the beach, eating seafood at the restaurant and viewing the iguanas in the lagoon. For deep-fishing, head to the area between the Yucatan coast and the island. The funnel effect created by this channel provides an excellent fishing ground and plenty of fish to catch. Other main attractions include the Playa Palancar and the Paradise Beach.
This island is full of stores to shop for souvenirs but the most interesting products are those made of silver. Silver is a lot cheaper than in other areas, but be careful to spot for original silver stamps since some products are made of fake silver. For a nice meal or snack, try these restaurants: El Morito, Kinta, La Cocay, Casa Denis, Pepe's Grill and Rolandi's. For a taste of nightlife, head to places like Wet Wendy's, No Name Cigar Bar, Tony Rome's, Reef Bar, 1.5 Tequila Bar and Lounge. Don't forget to mingle with the locals and travelling tourists alike.
