Arriving at Minorca

Most international flights to Minorca arrive at the Mahón Airport, which is only about 4-5 km from the centre of Mahón, which is Minorca's capital. The airport is equipped with cash machines and a bureau de change in the terminal. Guests can enjoy several cafés, bars and restaurants while waiting for Minorca flights, and there is a terrace lounge outside for those who prefer the sunshine. There are plenty of shops and stands for a little last-minute shopping as well. Visitors can access the Internet via Wi-Fi or by using the computers in the Internet café. The best way to find cheap flights to Minorca is by booking vacation packages through a travel agent, but some budget airlines may offer lower rates as well.

Getting Around Minorca

If you want to use a rental car for vicinity travel you should consider reserving one when you book your airfare to Minorca, especially if you are travelling during the peak season. There are a number of agencies located at the airport and on the resorts. If you need a ride from the airport there is a bus service to Mao. It leaves every thirty minutes from 6 am until 10 pm, and then it runs hourly until midnight. Taxis are a common way to get around this area if you choose not to rent a car. There are also cheap buses that service the beach areas, and they usually leave hourly.

Minorca Main Attractions

Minorca is a very laid-back resort area that many people claim is perfect for family trips. With the exception of the Xoriguer Gin Distillery, most attractions are certainly child-friendly. The sights include Museu de Minorca, which was formerly a Franciscan monastery, and La Mola Fortress, a beautifully preserved historical Spanish Fortress from the 1800s. The beaches are the main attractions for most visitors because they are not as crowded as those in many other resort areas. Some of the most beautiful Minorcan beaches are Cala Pregonda, Platja de Punta Prima, Es Grau, and Cala Macarelleta. Glass bottom boat tours are also very popular in these areas, and many guests enjoy the pampering massages and facials offered at local spas.

Minorca Shopping, Dining and Nightlife

Industrias Artesanas is the local factory where Minorcan artisans make Abarcas, which are a type of sandal. You can take a tour of the factory while in Minorca and purchase some of these world-famous shoes at a discount. You will also find plenty of beachside shopping centres as well as malls and shopping plazas in the towns. If you love fish and seafood, you will want to visit Minorca just for its cuisine. Lobster dishes are very plentiful, and you will definitely need to try lobster paella or lobster stew before you leave. The local gin is the pride of Minorca, which is why one of the main attractions is the Xoriguer Gin Distillery tour. Despite the low-key atmosphere, you will still find plenty of pubs, bars, and clubs along the waterfront. However, if you're more into house, trance or rave-style dance clubs you would find more suitable options in nearby Ibiza or Mallorca.
