Getting Around Catania

Catania has a small city centre which can be easily explored on foot. Buses are available for journeys around the city centre and to other towns and cities in Sicily. However, the system is not very efficient and passengers may find themselves waiting more than an hour for a bus to arrive. Check the AST or Interbus websites for more information. Tickets can be purchased from the bus driver or from newsagents. Taxis are readily available throughout the city centre. The Ferrovia Circumetnea is a narrow-gauge railway line that circles the base of Mount Etna. The service is available from Catania Borgo station and stops at the nearby town of Riposto.

Main Attractions

Catania is a vibrant Mediterranean city living under the cone of Mount Etna. Its compact size and historic architecture make it a wonderful destination for a city break. Visitors to the Piazza del Duomo will not fail to notice the Elephant Fountain (u Liotru). A symbol of the city, the statue is composed of an elephant topped by an Egyptian obelisk. Visit the majestic Duomo, which has been rebuilt several times over its long history due to damage from volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. The ruins of the Roman Amphitheatre can be seen beside Piazza Stesicoro. The Odeon, another Roman era building, can be found near the Amphitheatre. In its heyday, the Odeon was a theatre used for rehearsals. Visit the Castello Ursino, which sits in the urban centre of the city. The Civic Museum is located within the castle and contains artefacts from the castle and city.

Shopping, Dining and Nightlife

Catania’s high street is the bustling Via Etnea, a pedestrianised thoroughfare stretching from the Piazza del Duomo to the Four Corners. A branch of Coin, an Italian department store, is located on Via Etnea. Visit the Pescheria, Catania’s historic fish market, to pick up some freshly caught fish and exotic seafood. The food market at the Piazza Carlo Alberto offers colourful selections of fresh fruit, ripe cheeses, vegetables and homemade sausages. The menu at La Sicilian includes plenty of hearty local dishes such as swordfish carpaccio, stuffed calamari and rigatoni alla catanese. Enjoy a relaxing glass of wine at the Rendez Vous Wine Bar, or visit L’Incognito to soak up the faux-tropical ambience with a brightly coloured cocktail.
