The airport in Mykonos is situated approximately three miles southeast of the town itself. It only takes about 10 minutes to get from the airport to the town. During the summer, charter airlines and international airlines use the airport to transport tourists to the island. The airport deals with over 350,000 passengers each year, so there should be no problem finding cheap flights to Mykonos. The airport is not that large and has no restaurants, but there is a cafeteria available. The town of Mykonos is on the west coast of the island, while the airport is located in the interior. It is a small island but having an international airport makes it easy to get an airfare to Mykonos.
The transportation options are very good considering the size of the island. There is a regular public bus service that goes from the airport to the centre of Mykonos, provided by the Mykonos Bus Service, KTEL. There are three main bus routes, which can transport you cheaply around most of the island, and in the summer, they often run late up until 2 a.m. Many of the hotels operate a shuttle bus service to easily transfer their guests to and from the airport. Just in front of the terminal building there is a taxi rank or if you prefer, it is straightforward to hire car. There are also caiques, small boats, which provide transport around the coast. Therefore, after your Mykonos flights have arrived it will be simple to travel around the island.
As an island the principal attraction of Mykonos is its beautiful beaches and the water sports available for the tourists. The beaches on the south of the island are the most developed, such as Paradise and Super Paradise beach. Here you can find many cocktail bars, as well as facilities for various water sports. There are also many coves around there, such as Elia, which you can get to by water taxis. The beaches to the north are much quieter, and you'll probably have to drive there to reach them. At Ftelia you will be able to go surfing and windsurfing, as this area of the island gets plenty of wind.
There are many restaurants, cafés and taverns located in Mykonos. By the harbor front you will find some very good restaurants but they can be quite expensive. For some Greek fusion food try the Nobu restaurant and sample its exotic dishes such as black cod miso. Similarly, at the popular south coast resorts there are also some good but expensive restaurants. At these eating establishments traditional Greek food is served, such as souvlaki and moussaka. The Avli Tou Thodori Restaurant is highly recommended, where seafood platters and risotto are very popular dishes. There you will also find some specialties including a delicious salty, sharp cheese best eaten with fresh crusty bread. If you want to go shopping Mykonos town is your best bet.
