Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County International Airport is the largest in the state, with Grand Rapids Gerald, R. For fast long distance travel, there is a reliable Amtrak train service linking major cities and regional centres which runs from Michigan Central Station in Detroit, and also Greyhound buses operate regularly.

For city areas, it's good to take a walk around to see the minutiae, but if your feet get too tired, there are bus and taxi services in all the major cities as well as in most of the smaller towns. Check online for details when organising Michigan flights.

If you're interested in automobiles, Detroit is where they're all made. Henry Ford himself lived there, and there are many museums and displays devoted to this subject. Out of Detroit, the botanical gardens and Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids is definitely worth a visit but if you're up for a little more adventure, go skiing at one of the many resorts in the Upper Peninsula or in Northern Michigan.

If you're there in summer, be sure to check out the Pure Michigan 400 Nascar Sprint Cup race, located in Brooklyn, or traverse with the family on one of the many bicycle trails that are famous throughout the state.

Shopping, Dining and Nightlife

Michigan is a large state, and there are shopping centres everywhere you go. Some good ones are Downtown Birmingham with its lively outdoor shopping areas, also the funky and hip Ferndale with its second hand book and indie record stores. The Royce direct art gallery in Detroit has good quality affordable décor art, and is a great place to buy a gift for someone back home.

Downtown Grand Rapids has over 100 bars, restaurants and nightclubs which cater to all tastes, though Blues and Jazz are a particular favourite.
