Arriving at Guatemala City

La Aurora is the airport where all flights to Guatemala City arrive. It is located only 6 km from the centre of Guatemala City, and it is one of the largest airports in Central America. For cheap flights to Guatemala City you should consider one of the budget airlines that offer services to La Aurora. This updated facility offers services such as foreign exchange and ATMs, restaurants, cafés and rental car agencies. Shops include local arts and crafts as well as duty-free. There is a post office and pharmacy, and you can surf the Internet via Wi-Fi while you wait for Guatemala City flights. If you have a longer layover here, you can take a short tour of the Nacional Zoo nearby.

Getting Around Guatemala City

If you arranged for transport when you reserved airfare to Guatemala City you made a good choice. Most airport taxi drivers charge a fixed fare that is more than double the typical metered fare for the same distance. There are free shuttles for many local hotels, so you have this option if your hotel offers it. Buses and taxis are the main transportation around the city itself. While the bus fares are cheap, they are not consistent. Some routes cost a little more than others, and the fare is higher on Sundays. They do not run after dark due to frequent robberies. Taxi fares differ by cab, and you may get one with a metre or one with a negotiable fare. Be sure to agree on a price before entering the cab. Yellow taxis are the most reasonable, but they must be hired by phone rather than hailed in the street.

Guatemala City Main Attractions

The city is organized into 21 zones, which makes site-seeing easier to plan. Zone 1 is where you will find the historical sites. Guatemala City is best known for its glorious historical churches and cathedrals. Among the most visited are Iglesia de Santo Domingo, Cerrito del Carmen, Calvario, and Catedral Metropolitana. Many tourists explore the buried city of Kaminal Juyú, an archaeological site discovered underneath the modern capital. Zone 13 has many popular sites as well. Here you can visit the Aurora Zoo, Museum of Modern Art, and the Archaeology and Ethnology Museum. Zone 7 offers a few more ancient sites, and you can visit other museums in Zone 10 where there are several universities.

Guatemala City Shopping, Dining and Nightlife

You will find large shopping malls in Zones 10 and 11, but if you are interested in the local artisan crafts you will want to go to the Central Market, Lin-Canola, and Centro Guatemalteco de Textiles in Zone 1, the Artesania Market in Zone 13, or In Nola in Zone 10. The most common crafts in Guatemala City are woven fabrics, wood, ceramic and leather goods, and traditional costumes. You will want to sample a variety of sumptuous local cuisine like different sausages, chimichurris, and blends of sliced mangoes and other fruits with cucumbers. Zone 4 is the cultural district where you can find restaurants, bars, lounges, and clubs. For both dining and the night-life you will definitely need to explore this part of town.
