Samui Airport is located on the northern part of Koh Samui Island, about 1.5 miles north of the main village of Chaweng. It is regarded as one of the most beautiful airports in the world, carefully designed to blend into the stunning natural landscape. The recently upgraded terminal can cope with nearly 16,000 passengers a day, with the number of tourists expected to rise, this should mean there will be more cheap flights to Koh Samui available. From the airport there are minibuses available to take you onto your destination with prices starting from 70 baht for the closest places. Taxis are also available, but more expensive. There is also a selection of car hire companies operating such as Hertz, Budget and Sixt.
Koh Samui is quite small and you could travel around the more built-up coastal areas in about one hour. The interior, which consists of jungle, is much more difficult to travel through. Car hire is available after your Koh Samui flights have landed, but beware that the international companies charge much more than the local operators. Another viable option is to hire a car through a professional tour agency and arrange a driver. A cheap way to get around the island is by the 'sogathew', which are large red trucks. These are effectively the bus system on Koh Samui, although you have to flag them down and ring a bell to get on and off. Many people also rent motorbikes to travel around, as it is much cheaper than a car.
The idyllic island of Koh Samui has beautiful sandy beaches. These include Chaweng, Bophut, Lamai and Maenam beaches. If you enjoy scuba diving then Ang Thong National Marine Park is well worth a visit. These are a collection of 40 smaller islands so you will need to book a tour, which will include fishing opportunities as well. If you enjoy food and cooking then the Siam Kitchen at Lamai Beach gives you an authentic experience of a trip to the local markets and there you can take lessons on Thai cooking; a great reason to get flights to Koh Samui.
If you are looking for good nightlife then Chaweng has a lively beach scene with busy bars and clubs. Bar Ice Samui is an unusual experience, consisting of unique ice sculptures within the bar and should get you cooled down after time at the beach. There are many restaurants set in beautiful surroundings serving traditional Thai food around the island. The Spirit House Restaurant has a wonderful ambience, and is set in attractive gardens. The menu is a fusion of Thai cuisine mixed with modern food ideas, such as prawns in a coconut batter. Koh Samui is not a great place for shopping but after experiencing a relaxing holiday in an exotic island you will be glad you spent your airfare to Koh Samui.
