Piarco International is the closest airport to Trinidad, but flights to Trinidad may arrive there or at Crown Point International. Those with Trinidad flights arriving at Crown Point can take a ferry or a very short flight to Piarco. Travellers can book cheap flights to Trinidad through discount airlines, which offer services to either of these hubs. Piarco has a wide variety of passenger services including banking, postal service, dining, and shopping, and there is a duty-free zone. There is also a hotel and tourist information office as well as rental car and tour guide agencies. These same services are offered at Crown Point International.
You must hire taxis at official stands in the major cities of Trinidad. Travellers should always be wary of illegal taxis, and the way to tell if a cab is legitimate is to check the license plate to see if it begins with the letter ”H”. These taxis work on routes and charge a flat rate most of the time, and they will take at least four passengers per trip. You can hire private taxi drivers for your stay as well. Buses are cheap, but you may have to wait quite a bit for one. Another inexpensive method is using a ‘maxi', which is a mini bus that carries several passengers, and you can hail them in the street. You can also rent a car, which is still an economical choice since petrol is not that expensive in Trinidad. Reserving a car when you arrange airfare to Trinidad is always a good idea if you want to use this option.
One of the first items of your travel itinerary should be to visit Mount Saint Benedict, which is a very hospitable monastery perched in the Northern Range. The monks are very welcoming to visitors at their Pax Guest House, where they serve meals to overnight guests and lay out a generous tea to anyone who visits on a Sunday afternoon. You can also hike to the Stations of the Cross in this area if you are an outdoors enthusiast. Nature lovers and bird watchers will want to see Asa Wright Nature Center, which used to be a cocoa plantation but is now home to many species of birds, lizards and other creatures. There are several other nature trails and beaches along with the Caroni Bird Sanctuary in Trinidad as well. You may want to plan your trip during the annual Carnival or Divali celebrations to experience local cultural festivities first-hand.
You have a lot of shopping options in Trinidad from street vendors to modern malls. The main shopping districts are San Fernando and Chaguanas. There are a number of plazas, arcades, and shopping centres just about anywhere you go. Trinidad cuisine is a savoury blend of African and Indian flavours, but it is influenced by many other cultures as well. While the majority of locals enjoy meat dishes, there are plenty of vegetarian choices since some of the population is Hindu, for example, ‘doubles', which are Indian finger foods sold in stands on the street. Doubles are seasoned chickpeas wrapped in fried bread and covered with sauces and diced peppers, fruits and vegetables. Bars are densely packed into many areas of Trinidad, so you will have no problem enjoying a little beer or rum there.
