Good old-fashioned Southern hospitality combined with a rich history make the capital of Mississippi a great choice for a weekend jaunt. A major player in the civil-rights struggle of the 1960s, Jackson is home to a number of fine museums that focus on the conflict and the profound change that followed. The exhibit at the Old Capitol Museum displays photographs and film footage of this tumultuous time, while museums such as the Smith Robertson, housed in the first school for black children from the area, examine the struggles and achievements of African-Americans in art and literature. A stroll around the Farish Street Historical District presents many opportunities to view old houses, churches and other buildings, many of which were built by former slaves. Dont miss contemporary attractions like the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, the Russell C. Davis Planetarium and the "New Capitol", where the government of Mississippi addresses the issues of the day. The warmth and friendliness of the local people, an array of accommodation choices, and a range of restaurants serving up the best in Southern fare make Jackson feel like a home away from home.

Natchez, the oldest settlement on the Mississippi River, has more antebellum houses than any other place in the United States. Many of these historic homes are open to the public. The friendly local people welcome visitors to their historic city with warm Southern charm. Tour the homes, the Grand Village of the Natchez and the Natchez Museum of African-American History and Culture. Festivals and celebrations occur often throughout the year. For gamblers, the riverboat gaming experience is a fun and fascinating change from ordinary casinos. Active visitors will enjoy great golf, tennis, hiking, cycling and fishing.
