Weekend Getaways from Cambridge

Featured getaway: Springfield, Massachusetts

Springfield, Massachusetts
Springfield is perhaps best known as the birthplace of basketball and home of the Basketball Hall of Fame. (The story goes that local P.E. teacher James Naismith invented the sport to fill the gaps between football and baseball seasons.) But this historic town on the shores of the Connecticut River is famous for a few other reasons and definitely worth a quick visit or weekend away. Springfield was the birthplace and home of beloved children's author and illustrator, Theodore Geisel -- Dr Seuss. In fact, the Zoo in Forest Park, a sure hit with children, is said to have been the inspiration for many of his wild and wacky tales. Wander through the Dr Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden, at the Quadrangle, for a look at the Cat in the Hat and Yertle the Turtle cast in bronze. The city served as a major arsenal during the Revolutionary War, a role that is commemorated at the Springfield Armory National Historic Site, which displays an enormous collection of small pistols. History buffs will also enjoy the Connecticut Valley Historical Museum, which pays tribute to the ordinary people of the region who did extraordinary things.

Previous Featured Getaway: Brooklyn, New York
It seems that most people have a grandmother, great-uncle or some other distant relative who used to live in Brooklyn, or perhaps a friend who lives there now. In the early 1900s it was a mecca for immigrants arriving via Ellis Island. A hundred years later, young professionals and artists left pricey Manhattan digs for cheaper and more spacious Brooklyn. Neighbourhoods such as Brooklyn Heights and Park Slope, which had fallen into disrepair over the years, were restored and reborn as funky enclaves. Walk or cycle over the historic Brooklyn Bridge (or take the subway) to Brooklyn Heights for a stroll along the Promenade and breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline. Meander through Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens for a taste of nature in the urban wilds. Catch a performance at the world-famous Brooklyn Academy of Music. From the delicious Italian restaurants of Bensonhurst to the Irish bars that line the avenues of Bay Ridge, from the hot dogs and rollercoasters of Coney Island to the bagels and handball courts of Greenpoint, Brooklyn is a state of mind as well as a dynamic community. Discover why, no matter where people move on to, they remain Brooklynites at heart.  More info
