I've travelled all over Denmark, and Skagen is my favorite place! Fantastic beaches, a cute town, museums, and the special light, which is why Skagen has always attracted artists.
The great thing about Skagen is that you can choose between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. Depending on water conditions (jellyfish), you can just hop over to the other side in a matter of minutes. My favorite beach is the North Sea beach at Gl. Skagen.
This is the very nothern tip of Jutland where the North Sea and Baltic Sea meet. It's fun to have your picture taken with one foot in the North Sea and the other in the Baltic Sea. It's an easy walk from the parking lot to the top, but in the summer you can also opt for the "Sandormen," a tractor-drawn shuttle bus. Check out the Grenen Museum with works of Axel Lind, who is almost 100 years old and to my knowledge as of August 2006 still alive. He's a lovely old man who will happily sign the posters of his work, which you can buy in the museum shop.
This hands-on exhibition tells you all about nature in and around Skagen. You will learn that most of the times you are actually not standing in both seas at Grenen, as the North Sea waves turn around. The center is also a lot of fun for children. The beautiful modern building was built by Danish architect Jorn Utzon, who also built the Sydney Opera House.
This is the best spot to watch the sunset, especially in the summer. The little square at the beach in the old part of Skagen becomes a happening meeting place at sunset when the weather is nice. You can get snacks and drinks at the kiosk there.
You will love the many Skagen-style houses (yellow with red roofs). There is a selection of good shops along the pedestrian area to stock up on Danish design. Take a break at the harbor, where the fishermen sell their fresh catch. There is also a number of small museums in town that are very interesting.
This is the best place for fish in Skagen. Expensive but well worth it.
