My Top Ten City breaks

These are my favourite cities to spend a weekend in. That magic mixture of culture, entertainment, great food & wine/beer and friendly inhabitants
1. Berlin
Berlin, Germany
Berlin went through the wringer in the 20th Century. Now it emerges, a bittersweet mix of a painful past and a hopeful future. There is so much to see and do here and the locals can't wait to share it with you
2. Tallinn
Tallinn, Estonia
This is a town that hs be enjoyed soon, before the stag weekenders ruin it forever. Glorious architecture and a fascinating - if sad - history. And you have to have a glass of Vana Tallinn...
3. Marseille
Marseille, Provence
You wouldn't have wanted to come here 10 years ago, but you do now. The vibrant harbour and Canabiere have countless treats to uncover. The boat trip out to Chateau d'If is unmissable.
4. Sydney
Sydney, New South Wales
For those of us born in the Northern hemisphere there is a special kind of magic the first time you set eyes on the Opera House. Sydney is full of iconic buildings. It's airy style contrasts strongly with the cobbled cities of Europe and yet it still has character. What a vibrant city.
5. London
London, England
My own capital city. London has its history etched in its very streets. Its full of fantastic places to see and superb shops.
6. Cologne
Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia
Dominated by it's gargantun cathedral, this is a place full of charm. Come in December when the streets are filled with the enticing scents of the christmas markets.
7. Venice
Venice
OK, its not the cheapest place you'll ever visit, but its romanitic, beautiful and easy to get round. There are museums and shops that you'll adore, but most of all there will be a beautiful scene every time you turn a corner. The bridges, the buildings, the canals - superb!
8. Las Vegas
Las Vegas, Nevada
Its brash, trashy and cheap. What a fantastic place! Day or night, there are shows, restaurants - oh, and casinos. This is the US doing what they do best.
9. Beijing
Beijing, China
What a fascinatng city. From Tiananmen Square to the Winter Palace, from the Mao mausoleum to the Forbidden City, this is a place with a history both ancient and modern. The influences that shaped the ancient dynasties and the modern regime contribute to a heady mix. And as for the Great Wall at Badaling - its one of those places that you can hardly believe you are seeing.
10. Brugge
Bruges
Bruges seems so small and so charming that you can hardly believe how may wonderful buildings and excellent restaurants are crammed into the place. Lake Minnewater is beautiful - in fact all the canals are and there is always some new treat to spot as you meander around. Being Belgian, they have more beers than you can shake a stick at and food designed to make you double in size - chocolate, cream and chips with mayo. You just can't have a bad day out in Bruges.
