Our nation's capitol is a beautiful place to celebrate spring.

1. Tavira Restaurant
Though an unlikely location - downstairs in a bank building - the setting does indeed visually transport you to the lovely town of Tavira, Portugal. Having spent two weeks in Tavira earlier in the year, we couldn't resist trying this restaurant when we saw it advertised. A mural on the wall was instantly recognizable as a scene from the town, and the colorful tile pictures along the bar were a true Portuguese touch. The food was delicious; service impeccable; prices naturally more economical at lunch than dinner.
You've heard about the cherry blossoms April blooming in DC. Let me assure the hype is all true. Never have I seen so many SERIOUS photographers in one place! Walk the trail around the tidal basin, as well as some side trips around various monuments, and you'll be overwhelmed by the graceful branching, colorful blooming, and monument-framing views of over 3,000 Japanese cherry trees.
"You must go early for the pandas!" we were advised. Apparently several dozen other people had gotten the same information, but we were still able to get a front-row view of Mama, Papa, and Baby Panda going about their early morning frolic. Almost as entertaining was the response of the viewers; it was refreshing to hear the adults as well as the children laughing at the antics. "The baby's climbing way up high in the tree, and his mommy isn't even watching!" worried one small girl.

Though the pandas are the best-known residents of the zoo, there are many more to visit. Big cats and little prairie dogs; orangutans swinging overhead; and the delightfully sunny butterfly room as you emerge from the darkened aquarium area. Easy to spend many hours here; and, it's free!
