10 landscapes that you will never forget in the Southern France
One of the most amazing views in Provence, the gorges spread between the charming cities of Moustiers Ste Marie and Castellane, and the heigh at the top of the cliffs can reach 700m, which means that the river at the bottom of the gorge looks like a small blue/green ribbon. Many people enjoy rockclimbing on these wonderful cliffs, hiking, or just touring on both banks. A stop for lunch, dinner, or even the night in the authentic village of La Palud is a must.
With mountains more 4000 meters high, their glaciers and everlasting snow, the Ecrins Mountains are a real wonder in the Southern Alps. Wherever you are, the view is stunning.
Camargue is a perfect postcard : flamingoes are everywhere in the ponds, wild bull and horses wander in the marshes, large beaches with beautiful sand dunes, nice little villages whith good fish restaurants…But it isn't only a postcard: it's reality! A fragile and beautiful place where nature is preserved.
Situated Northof Aix en provence, the Luberon is a low mountain with lots of hidden wonders. Apart from the wellknown village of Gordes and the former ochre quarries of Roussillon, overcrowded with tourists, many authentic villages set high up on rocks, and many trails or narrow roads lead you to nice forests, small cliffs, lavender fields...
The Calanques are the gem of Marseille. Amazingly, they are part of the city (which is the second largest city in France). High white limestone cliffs which contrast with the blue sea and sky, the white seagulls and the surviving pinetrees (many important forest fires took place in the Calanques, and the forest is now very rare and fragile), the Calanques are a wonder for the eyes, as well as a paradise for hikers or rockclimbers. As they are so close to the city, many people come and visit them, and many efforts are being done by the local authorities to protect the area.
The entire Island is a wonder! From its wonderful beaches (from large ones to hidden gems) to its secluded mountain villages, the warm welcome of its inhabitants, the narrow coastal roads with the sea below your wheels, the wild pigs and cows in the middle of the roads in the mountains, the quiet pace of life, Corsica is a pure wonder.
From the town of Millau to as far as Albi, the tarn river cuts through wonderful landscapes, and created beautiful gorges. Driving on the scenic road along the gorges, one doesn't stop discovering villages, castles, wonderful landscapes with the green river at his feet.
When the lavender is blooming, the purple colour is dominant, and the delicious smell won't leave you for days. Authentic villages surrounded by lavender fields and apricot trees orchards.
Two ranges of grey and orange limestone cliffs raise among the mediterranean pine trees, green oaks and vineyards, near to the wine villages of Gigondas and Beaumes de Venise. The best way to enjoy the view is to hike in and around the Dentelles, on the various trails and paths.
Moureze, not very far from Montpellier, is a fairytale landscape of rocks in a natural cirque. Long or shorter hikes allow to discover the cirque, but if you prefer you can just admire the wonderful view from the belvedere in the park and learn about the rich history of the area in the park's Ecomusée (Ecological Museum).
