Holy week in Antigua, Guatemala...the ultimate Spring Break!!!

Take a stroll around this colonial town, see people in traditional dress, enjoy the decorations and processions in a beautiful setting, great weather all surrounded by a wonderful view of the volcanos.

1. Ni Fu Ni Fa
Argentinian restaurant: A parrillada(meat combo dish) for three people included four types of meat and was delicious. It had so much food there was no possible way for us to eat it. A salad bar is also included and the best part is it was $30!
2. Posada de Don Rodrigo

A beautiful patio hotel. Very economical. The procession passes by the hotel and there are restaurants and shopping next door.
3. Processions
This is the main attraction on Thursday and Friday of Holy Week. There are processions throughout the day and into the night. the city is completely safe allowing you to enjoy all it has to offer. The locals adorn the streets with rugs using colored sawdust, flowers, fruit, flowers, vegetables and more flowers making spectacular designs for the procession to pass over. The processions are of a religious theme depicting the last days of Christ.
4. Shopping
Guatemala is famous for it`s jade and there is plenty of it to buy. Be sure to shop around and make informed purchases because not everything that is green is jade!!!! There are also plenty of handcrafts available. The same goes with the jade, make sure you see what you are buying. You want to buy something made in Guatemala and not in China!!! If you bargain you can usually get good prices and most people will sell in dollars as well as in Quetzales.
5. Volcanos
Everywhere you walk in the city you will have a view of the three volcanoes(Agua, Fuego, Acatenango)...all in all guatemala has 33 active volcanos. On a clear day you can see the top of the peaks and if you are lucky it might spit out a bit of smoke for you.
6. Convento de Santo Domingo

This is and old convent where Monks used to live. It has been transformed into a beautiful 5 star colonial hotel with restaurant. You can tour the ruins of the original convent .
7. Local Market
The busiest days are Monday, Thursday and Saturday. Here you may find a wide selection of fruits & vegetables. You can also admire the colorful typical costumes worn by the indegenous people from surrounding villages.
