1. Bairro Alto
Bairro Alto, Lisbon, Estremadura
What a place! Time runs away with you in the Bairro Alto - the only place to be at midnight in Lisbon.

This tiny district comes alive after 11.30pm with the sound of music and good times.

Twenty and thirty somethings hang out in the streets, enjoying a drink and the music from the bars that line the streets.

Whatever you do, don't keep yourself to yourself - get chatting to the locals and you'll have a night to remember. The people here are lovely.

We arrived as tourists and left with a pocketful of phone numbers, emails and an invitation to return next year.

Best nights are Thursday, Friday and Saturday - but beware, before you know it, it'll be 4am, and you'll want to stay until the sun comes up.
2. Alfama
Alfama, Lisbon, Estremadura
Lisbon's charm is summed up beautifully in the Alfama district - a myriad of cobbled streets, quaint houses, unassuming shops and crumbling buildings.

If you've got strong legs and a good back, there's no excuse to take the tram to the top - on foot is the only way to explore here.

From Baixa, start heading uphill towards Se, and Castelo de Sao Jorge, and you'll reach these lovely tiled streets,

Life for the locals seems to meander on as if the tourists weren't there - washing hangs from windows, old men chat in the street and women cook on griddles outside their homes.

Those who brave the steep climb are rewarded with stunning sea views and an unrivalled panorama of the city - Alfama is the true heart of old Lisbon.
3. Ultimo Tango - Rua Diário de Notícias 62
Ultimo Tango served me the best steak I have ever tasted in my life.

In the heart of the Bairro Alto, no carnivore worth their salt can afford miss out on a meal here.

A traditional Argentinean restaurant, this place knows its steak. Try to get a seat near the back where you can see the magic happen.

I don't want to spoil it with endless description - just go, and don't forget to bow at the alter of the chef before you leave.
4. Estoril
Estoril, Estremadura
Estoril beach - great for families, young and old. But beware, a lot of the people here are beautiful, so if you're the self conscious type, it might be worth investing in a sarong!

A 30 minute train journey from Cais de Sodre (and 3.4 euro) brings you to Estoril, which has everything the sun, sea and sand lover could want.

It brings together old Lisbon (a castle looking out to the sea) with the new (plenty of cafes and shops to keep those ice lolly cravings at bay).

The tanned and gorgeous locals bath themselves in the sun's glow, while women in their 60s gather under brollies gossiping and frolic around in playful groups.

A beach for everyone.
