Versilia
based on 2 votes
Versilia is the most northern part of the Tuscan coast & is considered an Elite area for the Italian high society since the 50's, where it was used as location for many films. During July & August, this area is still very crowded, but the nicest time to explore the area will definitely be Spring or Autumn. The secret for a perfect holiday in Versilia? Take in the beauty of the sea ...& then flee to the mountains & all the cultural cities away from the coast! btw: This trip can be combined with my GoLIst about the Etruscan coast, as the Versilia is only about 100 kms north of that area...

1. Park Hotel Villa Ariston
Ave price:
$145
The most beautiful hotel in the area, especially for its large park and gardens, where you can relax after a tiresome day in the surroundings |
| Close by Park Hotel Villa Ariston, this restaurant is a high class fish restaurant with very special food creations. Plus: during the warm season, it is the only restaurant in the area that has a terrace with a view of the sea! |

| The most Elite location of the Versilia. Perfect for high class shopping. Small city with really cute houses. Watch out especially for the Art Nouveau architecture you will find throughout the whole place. It is realised in an absolutely beautiful way... |

4. Ristorante il Delfino, Ronchi, Marina di Massa
| Just a few kilometers north of Forte dei Marmi, this restaurant is on the sea and offers faboulous fish dishes. I would definitely say it is THE best fish restaurant in the area...(and medium budget!) |

5. Pietrasanta
| This city is known as the home of most famous artists of the area. It is a beautiful small town a few kilometers away from the coast, with a beautiful cathedral & many small typically Tuscan streets filled with art galleries. |

| The largest city of Versilia, it has a very beautiful promenade by the sea, with shops for all types of budgets & beautiful Art Nouveau architecture. The city is also known for the many luxury yacht yards. |

| The famous city of Pisa is only 30 mins. away from Versilia. |
| This beautiful medieval town is also only 30mins by car from Versilia. It is a very typical city, still almost entirely surrounded by its medieval walls... my tip: if you have to choose between visiting Pisa and Lucca, I would definitely go for Lucca! |

9. Marble Caves of Carrara
| Versilia is known for its marble quarries (although Carrara is not officially part of the Versilia). The marble caves above Carrara offer guided tours which are quite interesting. |
10. Ristorante da Venanzio, Colonnata, Carrara
| If you should visit the marble caves, you definitely need to stop for lunch at this restaurant in the small village of Colonnata, above Carrara. It's a very cute little restaurant offering all typical specialities of the area (mid-high budget). The village of Colonnata is especially known for its lard, which is covered with herbs and aged in marble boxes. Delicious, especially on slightly warm bread! |

11. Ristorante Pizzeria Tognozzi, Carrara
| If you should decide to stay in the area of Carrara in the evening, this restaurant (low-medium budget) is your best guess for a faboulous pizza and excellent meat. |

12. Sarzana
| Travelling north from Versilia, this is the first city you will encounter getting into Liguria. It is a very culturally alive city, so you will most probably find some type of antiquary market or exhibiton or concert when getting there. But even if you don't, the city's streets are again very typical and are full of small trattorias and restaurants... |

| Perfect for a day trip from Versilia! I would suggest to take the train from Viareggio. This way you will not have any parking troubles. Most regional trains stop every 20 minutes in each of the 5 villages (Cinque Terre - the five lands). You can then choose to either continue to travel by train or boat between the villages (you can even walk between some of them). |
