Zion, Bryce, Grand Canyon North Rim in 3 Days

6 Oct 2007  Love to travel. First trip with entire family. Really grateful for the opportunity to be with older parents and grown siblings.
4.5 of 5 stars based on 11 votes

Traveling with my 70ish parents and 30 - 40ish 2 sisters and 1 brother. 10/1/07 - 10/5/07.

Monday: Flying from Springfield Missouri to Las Vegas on Allegiant Air and staying at Boulder Station (too late to go anywhere that day).

Tuesday: Drive 45 minutes to Hoover Dam and then 2.5 hours to Springdale, UT. Ride shuttle through Zion National Park at sunset. Wow!

Wednesday: Go through Zion again and hike Weeping Rock and Court of Patriarchs. Drive 2.5 hours to Bryce Canyon and back. Wow!

Thursday: Drive 2.5 hours to Grand Canyon North Rim (double WOW) and back. Go to Zion and hike lower emerald pools.

Friday: Drive from Springdale to Las Vegas and fly home to Missouri.

Awesome trip! 892 miles. Highly recommend the Hertz Yukon XL - plenty of room for 6 adults and luggage.

  • 1. Springdale
    Springdale, Utah

Perfect "home base". Stayed at the Cliffrose - but it looked like there were several good choices (Best Western, Majestic View, Canyon Ranch, Flannigans).

Springdale is 2.5 hours from Las Vegas. It is literally at the mouth of Zion National Park and is 2.5 hours from either Bryce Canyon or the Grand Canyon North rim.

We could have saved a little driving by staying in Mount Carmel - but we liked the convenience of Springdale and the easy access to restaurants, outfitters, etc.. It is so convenient to Zion that we went there for 3 days in a row just for short visits - ride the 90 minute shuttle through the park on one day, hike to the lower emerald pools on another, hike to weeping rock on another.

Springdale is a little town with mostly mom and pop facilities. Nice, safe and beautiful.

Cliffrose Lodge & Gardens, Springdale, Utah

Read my review of the Cliffrose for all of the details, but this place was great. Casual, quiet, close to everything. Hot tub and firepits were great for evening relaxing. Cliffs of Zion and virgin river are right out back door. Can hike up river or walk to Elk preserve right from hotel. We all loved it!

  • 3. Zion National Park
    Zion National Park, Utah

Amazing sandstone cliffs rising thousands of feet high all around you. Ride the 90 minute free shuttle to get your bearings and be sure to get out and do some hiking. Could have spent a week here hiking, biking and such.

  • 4. Bryce Canyon National Park
    Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah

2.5 hour drive from Springdale through VARIED landscape. Mountain drive with switchbacks and Mt. Carmel tunnel out of Zion. Then on to slickrock country where we got out and were very close to a dozen big horn sheep. Red rock canyon is beautiful and Bryce is amazing. Not as good as Zion or Grand Canyon (for us) but definitely worth the trip.

  • 5. Grand Canyon North Rim
Grand Canyon North Rim, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

Wow Wow Wow. Pictures can not do justice to the Grand Canyon. It is amazing. We drove the 2.5 hours from Springdale stopping to eat in Kanab. The drive is beautiful, ranging from canyons to mesas to pine and aspen forests. At the north rim we went to the lodge, Bright Angel point and Point Imperial. Don't miss it.

    Oscar's Cafe, Springdale, Utah

The best place we ate. We had a wonderful breakfast at Oscars and would have gone back for dinner if we had time. Pick this over Zion Pizza or the Pioneer for sure!

  • 7. Hertz Yukon XL

This was an awesome rental vehicle for our trip. We are big people - my brother is 6'5" and 300 pounds - and it was very comfortable. We traveled 892 miles and loved the Yukon. Plenty of power for the mountain terrain and decent gas mileage ($130).

We own a 2001 Yukon and the 2008 XL was soooo awesome. My brother had the best time driving and playing with the gadgets!
