    Petrozavodsk, Republic of Karelia

An overnight train ride from St. Petersburg or Moscow, this is worth the trip. On lake Onega, make sure you take the trip to Kizhi - an island museum that provides shows of folk dancing & cultural activities.
The city also offers great restaurants & theater opportunites, and has at least 3 hotels that are reasonable and cater to western tourists.
City days are typically held the 2nd weekend in June - complete with PeterI & Catherine the Great wandering the city in full costume, and a chance to tour & sail Lake Onega.
Winter offers a cross-country ski trail that's lit up for use, and New Year's brings a celebration with fireworks & live bands in the city square.

  • 3. Murmansk
    Murmansk, Murmansk Oblast

This city is about 1 1/2 day train ride from Moscow or St.Petersburg, but definitely worth the trip in summer, when White Nights means you can literally watch the sun bounce off the horizon. The Alyosha monument, local museum, swimming pool, "water zoo park/aquarium" (see trained seal show) & trip out on the sea are several ways to enjoy a day or two north of the Arctic Circle.
