While Milwaukee does not have a distinct type of cuisine unique to our area or city (unless you count Beer!), there are certain dishes that are found in abundance in our great city. This list includes an Insider's view of some of the best fish fries, burgers, and other bar food to be had in Milwaukee.

1. Fish fry - McBob's
McBob's is a little hole in the wall Irish pub tucked away about 50 blocks from downtown Milwaukee. They are known for their food, esp. the fish fry, tacos, Reubens, and breakfast. They went through a recent remodel that includes more dining space and a fireplace. The grouper is outstanding, and the combo that includes perch and walleye is also excellent. To get there take Hwy 41 to Lisbon Avenue, then left on North - and it's directly on your left/
2. Fish Fry - The Tracks - Milwaukee, WI
Great neighborhood bar close to UW-Milwaukee. Serves fish fry Wednesdays and Fridays. Also known for great nachos, sandwiches, bloody marys, and friendly staff. Watch televised sports or sand volleyball leagues here. Nice outdoor patio with gas firepit.
3. Fish fry - Lakefront Brewery
Known for their great beers and funky tours, Lakefront is also known for their great fish fries. Sit at large tables and meet your neighbors and other travelers! Weekends will often include the Brewhaus Polka Band. Get their early - do the tour, and stay for dinner.
4. German Sausages - Mader's
Get your bratwurst and knackwurst on at this authentic German restaurant on Old World Third Street. Go for the sausage platter or try one of their other German specialties. Then hit the bar and knock back a few boots of beer.
5. More sausage and landjagers - Old German Beer Hall
If Mader's is out of your price range, then hit the Old German Beer Hall just a few doors down. Order your sausages at the counter and the sassy waitresses will deliver to your table. They also serve 1/3, 1/2 and full liters of Hoffbrau beers. Their warm pretzels are the best around. Will often feature live music on weekends, an interesting game of skill in the back room, and if you have a group of friends, order up a "shot-ski".
This tiny, clean, and well maintained and serviced pub is located in the valley on St. Paul, between downtown and Miller Park. The food is ridiculously inexpensive, and the burgers ROCKS. Order the Sobelman special, which comes with two kinds of cheese, sour cream, jalapenos, bacon, and I can never remember what else! It's great! Also known for wonderful Bloody Marys that practically contain a full meal in the glass.
7. Upscale burgers - Elsa's on the Park
If Sobelman's is the poor man's burger, Elsa's is the rich-man's burger. A long-time Milwaukee hangout - Elsa's is where Madonna would go to get a burger, if she ate burgers in Milwaukee. Famous locals and athletes can be found grazing here in this unique restaurant that serves it's burgers in stainless steel bowls. Drink champagne while eating a burger and viewing the rotating eclectic art. A big hit at Xmas time to see what kind of a bizarre tree their artists have built this year. It's location on Cathedral Square is also great for after dinner barhopping. Can get crowded, drinks are expensive, and dress to impress. Serves til 1:00 a.m.
8. Brew Pub Food - The Original Waterstreet Brewery
This brewpub has been serving Milwaukee since 1987 - and it's convenient location downtown on Water Street makes it great for visitors. The beer may not be the favorite microbrew of locals, but it can hold its own. The food is very good, and they also serve your bratwurst and knackwurst.
9. Chicken Wings and Trailer Trash Fare - Club Garibaldi and Palomino
Located just a few miles south of downtown, the Bay View neighborhood continues to sprout hip, unique, and inexpensive restaurants and bars.

Located across from each other on the intersection of Russell Avenue and South Superior, and within walking distance of live music venue The Cactus Club, and old time cocktail lounge At Random.

There is only one place to go in Milwaukee for hot wings, and that is Club Garibaldi. Grilled spicy and super meaty wings are served up in a basket with blue cheese and celery. This working man's corner bar is a long-time Bay View tradition, and is still the meeting place of the Giuseppe Garibaldi Society, an Italian fraternal organization. Check out the huge disco ball in the back room - then locate it in one of the old time photos along the back wall. Great fish fries and bloody mary's can be had here too.

Across the Street is the rockabilly joint The Palomino, known for fried White Trash food, such as deep fried pickles, Chicken Fried Chicken, the Velvet Elvis, and also great wings. Good drink specials. In the summer months Palomino has a nice street side patio.

Warning - if you come from a smoke-free town, both of these places can get heavy on the smoke during busy evening hours. Hit them up for lunch instead.
Known for their incredible custard and unique flavors of the day (Rum and Coke, Tiramisu), they are also known for their huge burgers and great french fries. Standing room or carryout only - two locations, but I like the outdoor seating area and fountain at the South 76th street location. Owned by the same gentleman that owns Elsa's. Go here first, then get dressed up and go to Elsa's for champagne with your burger!
11. Pub food and specials - Slim McGinn's
Located downtown - this Irish pub is known for their wonderful food and nightly specials. Saturday nights will get you flat iron steaks, crab legs, and other steak specials for under $15.00. All of the food is good, but people go here for the above specials. I also love their BLT and Irish Dip. Yet again, another pub with a great bloody mary!

This is also the place to park and get a free ride to games and events at the Bradley Center on the Slim-osine.
