276. St. Mary's Cathedral and St. Michael's Church at Hildesheim
| St Mary's Cathedral and St Michael's Church at Hildesheim - St. Mary's is a romanesque church built around 1020 and contains the sarcophagus of St. Godehard, the patron saint of traveling merchants. St. Michael's was built as a Benedictine monastery around the same time and is a perfect example of Ottonian style. During the reformation it became a Protestant property, but somehow the monks remain until this day. Both were completely destroyed in WWII, except for the medieval rose bush at St. Mary's, which still blooms to this day. |

Now the outbuildings now house a restaurant, farm shop, a glassworks, a flower shop and a baker's. Bornstedt Church - begun in 1854 in an Italian style, it contains the epitaph of the tragic scholar Jakob Paul Freiherr von Gundling a buffoonish courtier who was buried in a wine cask. Royal Forest -The area around the village of Sacrow was owned by several aristocratic families in the 19th century. It was purchased by Friedrich Wilhelm IV and converted into a Royal forest and park by Lenné. Originally the location of a menagerie for Frederich Wilhelm II, he eventually built a small palace for his mistress. The island still contains an aviary. Böttcherberg (Mont Böttcher) - Can't prove this or find anything on this. Jagdschlos Glienicke - Originally a hunting lodge, this small building has gone on to be a quarantine station, a factory, an orphanage, a prince's residence, Soviet barracks, a youth hostel, squatters apartments and now offices. 281. Abbey and Altenmunster of Lorsch
| Abbey and Altenmünster of Lorsch - The abbey (Kloster) was established for the Benedictines in the mid 700s and was the final resting place for two Frankish kings. The Torhalle (gate house) still survives from the Carolingian era in remarkably good shape. Little remains however of the rest of the abbey which lost power after 1232 when it was sold and the Cistercians arrived, and more importantly destroyed by the Spanish army in 1621. Altenmunster is another nearby abbey with nothing much left to see. |
| Mines of Rammelsberg and Historic Town of Goslar - Mining began here as early as 300 b.c. and continued up until the 1980's. It began as a silver mine, but over the centuries extracted copper and lead as it's main targets, and over that time mined 27 tons of ore. Now it is a museum with working mine trains for giving tours. The wealth of Goslar is directly due to the adjacent mine. The town is now famous for it's nearly 1800 half timber houses from various periods still remaining from as early as the 15th century. |
283. Maulbronn Abbey (Kloster Maulbronn)
| Maulbronn Monastery Complex - This abbey complex was build in the mid 1100?s and contains a triple nave church, chapels and cloisters surrounded by a fortified wall. The domestic buildings such as a mill, bakery and forge are just outside the walls. After the reformation broke out it was seized by the Duke of Württemberg and turned into his private hunting lodge. Shortly afterwards it was again given a religious purpose under the protestants and still remains a seminary. |
| Town of Bamberg - As the town was not bombed in WWII, Bamberg has many medieval churches still standing, including the Bamberg Catherderal (Dom St. Peter und St. Georg) the final resting place of Emperor Henry II. Also of great note is the Altes Rathous built on a tiny island in the river with bridges to both sides. Although UNESCO doesn't mention it, Bamberg is also famous for the nine breweries and the interesting beers they make. |
| Collegiate Church, Castle, and Old Town of Quedlinburg (1994) - The Collegiate Church of St Servatius was founded on the hill at the request of Otto the First's mother Mathilde. The Free Secular Imperial Abbey created a haven for unmarried or widowed wealthy women, without requiring them to take vows to any particular order. The castle on the other side of the hill is crumbling. The old town is filled with half-timbered houses, not all of which are in good repair. The town's imperfections seem to be part of its charm. |
286. Volklingen Ironworks
| Völklingen Ironworks - The giant echoing buildings became silent when iron production came to a halt in 1986. Smelting began in Völklinger Hütte' in 1883 and the 6ha area is the only complete smelting facility still in existence in the western world. Now it is a museum with guided tours available. |
287. Messel Pit Fossil Site
| Messel Pit Fossil Site - Near the city of Darmstadt is the largest site of intact fossils in the world. The shell oil lake bed has an incredible array of Eocene life forms so well in tact that many of the insects are still brightly colored, and hair and feathers remain on many other organisms. Over 1000 different species have been excavated including insects, bats, miniature horses, primates, turtles, frogs and the Messel giant ant. |
288. Bauhaus Dessau Foundation
| Bauhaus and its Sites in Weimar and Dessau - The Bauhaus School of Design (Statatliches Bauhaus) began in Weimar under Walter Gropius. The concept of the school was to mix architecture with the applied arts. It created a style that was spare, functional, and geometric and was a major influence on what is now called Modern Architecture. When the Nationalists came to power in 1924 funding for the school was cut and the school moved to Dessau. The five locations listed on the UNESCO world heritage are the Main Building, the Van-de-Velde Building and the Haus am Horn in Weimar and The Bauhaus and Masters Houses (Feininger, Muche-Schlemmer, Klee-Kandinsky and the Gropius Houses) in Dessau. |
289. Cologne Cathedral (Dom)
| Cologne Cathedral - Work began in 1248 on this most Gothic of Cathedrals, the east section was opened in 1322 and building on the Kolner Dom continued until the around 1500 and left unfinished for another 400 years. An accidental discovery of the original plan prompted a new interest in the building and funds were raised and work resumed in 1842. For several years it was the largest structure in the world. And it remains one of the largest churches in the world. It was added List in Danger by UNESCO by the building of 4 high rise buildings less than a mile away that would ruin the distinctive skyline of the area and its visual integrity. |

290. The Luther Memorials in Eisleben and Wittenberg
| Luther Memorials in Eisleben and Wittenberg - Although there seems to be some doubt as to the authenticity of the actual buildings, there is no doubt that the locations of Luther's actions are historically important. As these locations have long been a place of pilgrimage there have been museums in both cities for a long time. In Eisleben the house where he was born and another where he died have been declared WH sites. In Wittenberg both churches (Town Church & Castle Church) where Luther is to have posted his "95 Theses" and started the Reformation are also sites. Also in Wittenberg is Lutherhalle, his former residence and now museum, and the house of Melanchthon Luther's closest ally and associate. |
Classical Weimar - Weimar has two different sets of WH sites based on an artistic movement, the first being the Bauhaus movement and the second being from Wiemar Classicism. Duchess Anna Amalia and her son Karl August's patronage drew many great writers and philosophers to Weimar.
Goethe's House - The home Goethe and his wife Christine lived in for nearly 50 years has been well preserved and was a gift from Karl Augustus. It contains a museum of Weimar Classicism and the people of that era. Schiller's House - The house contains the original furnishings from the 3 years that Schiller lived here and wrote William Tell, with a museum attached. City Church, Herder House and the Old High School - The City Church (aka St. Peter und St. Paul). Herder and his sizeable family inhabited the superintendent's quarters behind the vicarage. The Old High School was built in 1716 as a simple baroque building with entered by a double flight of stairs. City Castle ( aka the Residential Palace or Schlossmuseum) - Rebuilt for Karl Augustus in a Neo-Classical style as befits Weimar Classicism, the museum has many original furnishing for its grand rooms and excellent artwork from the time period. Widow's Palace (Wittumspalais) - The Dowager Anna Amalia's house became a meeting place for Goethe and his contemporaries to discuss the values of the day. Duchess Anna Amalia Library - Anna Amalia converted the Green Palace into a library and opened it to the public in the early 18th century. This amazing library caught fire in 2004 and half of the one million items were destroyed. The library opened again in 2007, but they expect it to take to 2015 to finally finish the restoration. Princes' Tomb and Historic Cemetery - An tree lined avenue leads to the Ducal Vault, which had originally been built for royalty, but was later made the final resting place for Goethe and Schiller and other of Weimar's illustrious citizens. Park on the Ilm with Roman House, Goethe's Garden House and Garden - Nature and classical art merge in this park planned by Goethe. The Garden house was Goethe's residence before the house on Frauenplan was built for him, and used it as a summer house and inspiration for his poems until his death. His Star garden was arranged with a combination of practicality and aesthetics, including orchards and vegetable plots with flower gardens with a star formation path as its centerpiece. Castle, Orangery and Castle Park Belvedere - The Belevedere Castle was built by Ernst August. Recently restored it now contains a museum, with exhibits on hunting and gardening and art and porcelain. Attached is an English style park and an orangery for winter gardening. Castle and Castle Park Tiefurt - Built on the banks of the River Ilm, Tiefurt was the residence for Constatin, the younger brother of Karl August. Castle and Castle Park Ettersburg - The Ettersburg Palace complex consists of the old palace itself, the adjacent church, and the new palace in front, and was a royal summer residence. In the early 20th century it became a school. But went unused and fell into disrepair. It has recently been opened for concerts and theatre performances. |

Historic Centre of Mexico City and Xochimilco
This is a very ambiguous listing, and other than the Templo Mayor, I can find no absolute landmarks included in the Historic Centre. However, Xochimilco is a nearby village that still retains some of the canals and islands constructed by the Aztecs and the floating gardens still used today for flower and vegetable production. |

Historic Centre of Oaxaca and Archaeological Site of Monte Albán
Once again UNESCO has left it ambiguous as to what consists of the Historic Centre, but the city is recognized for it's grid pattern and colonial buildings. Monte Alban is perhaps the greatest Zapotec archaeological sites and was practically abandoned by the 7th century. |

| With mysterious origins this temple complex began around 200 BC, but became the major metropolis of the area several hundred years later. It was mysteriously abandoned and possibly ruined by its own peoples around 650 AD. Later on the Aztecs later considered it a sacred site built by giants. |

| Historic Town of Guanajuato and Adjacent Mines - Guanajuato developed as silver mines were discovered in the area. The city was built over tunnels for the river to run through, but since the nearby dam was built these have been turned into roadways. With the wealth of silver, the town built many imposing buildings in colonial style. UNESCO mentions no particular silver mine. |

Pre-Hispanic City of Chichen-Itza - Built by the Maya, Chichen-Itza was a bustling population center by 600 AD, but according to Mayan chroniclers the Toltec took power around 987 and new buildings were introduced in a mix of both styles. Chichen- Itza has the main components exemplifying Native Mexican construction of the times, with a pyramid, ball court, observatory, cenote, temples and market. Although not completely abandoned, the population diminished after revolts and wars around 1221, and the Spanish wanted to make it their capitol until the Mayans revolted and the Spanish retreated. |

| Historic Centre of Morelia - UNESCO states "Built in the 16th century, Morelia is an outstanding example of urban planning which combines the ideas of the Spanish Renaissance with the Mesoamerican experience. Well-adapted to the slopes of the hill site, its streets still follow the original layout. More than 200 historic buildings, all in the region's characteristic pink stone, reflect the town's architectural history, revealing a masterly and eclectic blend of the medieval spirit with Renaissance, Baroque and neoclassical elements. " |

| El Tajin, Pre-Hispanic City - The Totonac city had a population of 25,000 people in 4 square mile area and was at its height at the first millennium. The most famous building is the Pyramid of the Niches, with 365 niches, representing the days of the year. Also in the compound are several more temples and a couple of ballcourts. |
| Historic Centre of Zacatecas - The city was founded after silver was discovered nearby, which explains the unusual location for such a large city at 8000 feet built amidst the steep hillsides of a narrow valley. The rich inhabitants built many baroque limestone buildings, including mansions, churches, convents and public buildings. The cathedral is one of Mexico's best examples of Churrigueresque style, the Spanish Baroque style known for it's extreme florid detailing. |

Earliest 16th-Century Monasteries on the Slopes of Popocatepetl - Although UNESCO sites 14 monasteries, it seems they can't decide on the last one, and they are certainly not all on the slope of the volcano Popcatepetl. None the less here is the list of the monasteries with the last two with asterisks being the ones that UNESCO seems to be confused about. 1. San Mateo Apostol in Atlatlauhcan 2. Catedral de la Asuncion in Curenavaca 3. San Juan Bautista in Tetela del Volcán 4. Ex-convent de la Asuncion de la Virgen in Yautepec 5. Santiago Apóstol in Ocuituco 6. |
| Pre-Hispanic Town of Uxmal - One of the most intriguing Mayan sites, Uxmal was built in the late-classic era and may have been home to as many as 25,000 people. It appears the population began to dwindle after 1200 AD, but wasn't completely abandoned until after the Spanish arrived. The most well known buildings are the Great Pyramid, the Magician's Pyramid (built in an oval pattern), the Quadrangle and the Dovecote. Some of the ruins have been completely restored, while others have been left in semi and completely overgrown state. |

| Hospicio Cabañas, Guadalajara - aka Instituto Cultural Cabans, this is tha largest colonial building in the Americas. It was designed to function as a multipurpose compound for a hospice, almshouse, workhouse and orphanage which it continued to be until the late 70's when it was turned into a school for the performing arts. The structure has 23 courtyards, a domed chapel, frescoes by Jose Clemente Orozco and built on one level to facilitate movement of the invalid, aged and very young. |
| Archeological Zone of Paquimé, Casas Grandes - Paquime or Casas Grandes started out as approximately 20 house groups on a single level by peoples still unidentified. It appears the whole adobe structures were rebuilt around the 14th century into multi-level "apartment" buildings, some as tall as 5 stories with walls as deep as 5 feet thick. An intricate system brought water from 8 km away and another system to drained waste water. An unusual find at this site are the round rooms used for rearing Macaws, probably for trade. The population peaked at about 3000 people, before fire destroyed it and the people disappeared. |
| Historic Monuments Zone of Tlacotalpan - In the 18th & 19th centuries Tlacotalpan was was one of the most important port cities in the Americas and it's situation on the very wide Paploapan river was instrumental. During this time the sugar and cotton plantation owners built many modest colonnaded houses in bright Caribbean colors. When the railroads usurped transport by river, the town lost it's importance, and was left behind which has helped preserve the large number of historic buildings. The town still retains this sleepy feeling to this day. |

501. Archaeological Zone of Xochicalco
| Archaeological Zone of Xochicalco - A Mayan archeological site for an area settled as early as 200 BC, the city was at hits zenith from 700 to 900 AD. Only 30 percent of the site has been uncovered, and several pyramids have been uncovered, as well as an underground observatory. The Pyramid of the Plumed Serpent may be one of the most attractive buildings of Pre-Columbian times in all of Mexico with it well preserved bas-reliefs carvings. |

| Historic Fortified Town of Campeche - British and Dutch government condoned buccaneers were a constant threat to this extremely important timber and dye port. In 1663 these marauders attacked the city and massacred as many residents as they could. This attack led to the walled fortification of the city, with its eight bastions and 2500 meters of wall. |

| Ancient Maya City of Calakmul, Campeche - Only 30 miles from the Guatemalan border, Calakmul is one of the largest Mayan cities yet discovered with over 6000 structures, of which only a fraction have been excavated. The Mayan also built canals and reservoirs for the population of 50,000 inhabitants. The largest pyramid in Mexico is located here. Although the site is large in landmass and number of structures, the chalky limestone that the Mayan used for their more intricate carvings has deteriorated beyond recognition for most of the site and the jade objects have been moved to safer locations. |

| Franciscan Missions in the Sierra Gorda of Querétaro - Missions of Jalpan, Conca, Tilaco, Tancoyol and Landa de Matmoros were built by by friar Juniparo Serra (later to found San Diego California and recently sainted himself). These missions were built several hundred years later than the conquer of Mexico and are less fortress like than those built earlier. These missions have a more welcoming facade, and have incorporated native influences into their designs. |

505. Museo Casa Luis Barragan
| Luis Barragán House and Studio - This reservations required Museum of Luis Barragan's 1947 house shows his architectural interests at the time. Barragan used the location of a house as an architectural element and didn't use blue or green in the house, but brought them in from use of glass to see the gardens and sky. This 3 story house is also noted for Barragan's freedom from preconception with doors of varying height in atypical locations. Also interesting are the motifs and paintings to keep the visual interest. |

Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California - The Sea of Cortez is habitat to one-third of the world?s marine mammal species, 170 birds, and over 900 species of fish. The general locations are: Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California Flora and fauna protected area Baja California - all 244 islands located within the gulf where development is heavily regulated. Upper Gulf of California and Colorado River Deltan Biosphere reserve Isla San Pedro Mártir - a steep cliffed island in the middle of the Gulf, that was used as a guano gathering site. The Mexican government declared it a biosphere in 2003. El Vizcaino Biosphere reserve - already a world heritage site unto itself (see above) Bahia de Loreto National Park - In 1996 the 2,065 sq. kilometer park was created ranging from Isla Coronado in the north to Isla Catalana in the south and is especially important as nesting habitat for sea turtles. Cabo Pulmo National Park - located on the east cape region, only 60 miles north of Los Cabos and was designated as a National Marine Park in 1995 and includes important coral reefs for the local species of fish. Cabo San Lucas Flora and fauna protected area - no documentation found for this Marias Islands Biosphere Reserve - A chain of four islands that began serving as a penal colony since 1905. Unlike prisons, the prisoners of a colony are required to shelter and feed themselves. However heavy abuses were a constant problem, and prisoners were forced into hard labor on the salt flats on the islands. As a penal colony the islands have had very little development and no tourism. The government had been taking steps to close the colony and clean up the environment, but prison conditions on the Mexican mainland required the returning prisoners. The islands are home to the endangered Tres Marias Raccoon and Tres Marias Cottentail, as well as birds and marine life. Isabel Island National Park - a tiny island between the Isla Marias and the mainland, with a salty crater lake in the middle and known for it's tremendous bird populations. It is home to 90% of the worlds Heerman's Gulls, along with such species Red Footed Boobys, Frigatebirds and Brown Pelicans. The Sooty Terns of the islands were almost hunted to extinction by the introduction of housecats to the island, but the situation seems to have been rectified. Archipelago of San Lorenzo Nayarit |
