The sights and culinary delights of China

Ask this member a question. JetsettingOzpatriot With the Olympics just around the corner and having read stories and seen many documentaries on China we thought it was time that we took the plunge and went to see one of the most populated countries on earth.

My wife and I decided to do a China experience tour with a well known travel company and spent 11 days touring Shanghai, Xi'an and Beijing.

My wife and I were on a package tour of China as part of a Wendy Wu Tours "China Experience" tour staying at Shanghai, Xian and Beijing.

The first port of call was Shanghai where we stayed at the Ramada CCECC Hotel Zhabei. For a communist country this hotel ws not too bad however, if you are expecting 5 Star luxury then forget it. It is classed as a 4 Star Hotel but this must mean by China standards but even so was still a pleasant place to stay.
Wuzhen, located in the north of Zhejiang Province, approximately 2- 3 hours from Shanghai (depending on the traffic). It embraces the Beijing - Hangzhou grand canal and has many canals that criss cross the whole town.

In the past its residents built houses along the canals and traded near the bridges that abound throughout the city. Today it is a peacefull village maintained by the Chinese Government as a "working" example of history. The ancient docks, waterside pavilions, and corridors make for a pleasant romantic stroll and the atmosphere seems to transport you back several centuries. For entertainment there is a martial arts boat, hua gu opera with local characters, a shadow play and many locals who still live in the city and who show off the rich traditions of the locality. Wu zhen is famous for its natural beauty and has been the birth place for many talented people in history and has been home to many scholars and royalty like the South Dynasty Prince of Liang Kingdom Zhao Ming and the literary master Mao Dun.

By taking a casual stroll around the cobblestoned streets or even a leisurely trip by boat around the canals you feel the serenity, peacefulness, and subtle beauty of the Jiang Nan water town.
The Bund in Shanghai is one of the must see places. It is best to go twice, once during the day so that you can see a working river and get to experience the atmosphere of this vibrant city and again at night to see the beautiful display of lights that turn the river into a kaleidascope of neon lights.

Don't be put off my the myriad of street hawkers as this only adds to the excitement of being in China. Besides, haggling over prices makes for a fun time.

I strongly recommend that you take a boat trip at night to get the best views but make sure you have new batteries in your camera as the sights are spectacular.
Xintiandi is more locally known as the French Quarter of Shanghai and is home to many fine restaurants, markets and tourist attractions.

It has been refurbished quite extensively and as such you will find the prices a little higher than average. It is a great place to wander about and have a meal with many different cuisines available.

If you are lucky you may find the family home of Jackie Chan (not far from Starbucks) but don't bother knocking because he is hardly ever there. It was suggested that he spent quite a few million dollars in refurbishments around the area and I must admit he did a good job as it is a wonderful place to relax and have a meal or just a cup of coffee.
If you want to enjoy an exhilerating ride then you must take the Shanghai Maglev Train (SMT) from Pudong International Airport to the city (or vice versa). This train has got to be experienced to be believed.

Construction of the SMT began in April 2001 and completed in 2004. The 30-km line runs between Pudong Shanghai International Airport and the Shanghai Lujiazui financial district. If you take a bus to or from the airport expect to spend any where between 60 - 90 minutes watching the scenery go by whereas the SMT takes about eight minutes. The SMT set a world record on 12th November 2003 when a five-car train achieved the top speed of 501 km/h (311 mph) while another train passed at 430 km/h on the adjacent track.

The Transrapid in Shanghai has a design speed of over 500 km/h (310 mph) and a regular service speed of 430 km/h (267 mph). The SMT is currently the fastest commercial railway system in the world and the Chinese Government is considering other similar trains throughout China although it is doubted if they will be of similar speed given the topography of the country.
