If you want to see local, national, or even some international performers, these places will have a calendar on their web page so you can plan ahead and, in most cases, buy tickets online to hold at will call (box office). Most venues are 21+ unless it is a place such as a classical music venue, outdoor theatre or unless otherwise noted. Always have ready a valid I.D. such as a passport or U.S. state issued driver's license for proof of age. Bring earplugs or buy earplugs at the bar as most of these venues can be very loud.
This is not the original location of the historic San Francisco Fillmore Auditorium, but this venue has its own historic value. The photographs and concert posters that adorn the walls will take you back at least 40 years through San Francisco's legendary music experience.
When you walk in, you are greeted with someone saying, Welcome to the Fillmore! There is always a full basket of Red Delicious apples for guests to enjoy. Concert goers can go upstairs to the cafe and often hear acoustic performances between the bands on the main stage. There's a short menu of food items you can order, too. Balcony seating is highly coveted, so line up early out front if you want a seat for the whole night! All ages venue.
This is a very ornate and intimate concert venue. You can opt to buy a ticket that includes dinner with a guaranteed seat upstairs with a great view of everything. There has been a lot of history made here with performers of every genre and nearly every country of the world coming to play here.
Some say when they're in Bimbo's that they feel like they're in the movie Goodfellas. It has a 1950's lounge feel to it. Robin Williams will practice new material here so if you see the words working on new material on the marquee outside the club, try to snag a ticket. This is not a venue where there are acts performing nightly so check the calendar often for future bookings.
This used to be an old speakeasy back in the day, but now it is a club for local and touring acts. There's a pool table, a kitchen to order dinner, and some comfy couches. There are two rooms when you go downstairs and one is mainly used for the live acts. Sometimes they have weekly dance nights.
Upstairs from this venue is the Swedish American Music Hall. This is a nice space and it is generally for seated events.
Bottom of the Hill gets its name because it is below Potrero Hill. It's a small venue for local and touring acts. The place can get really full, but you can escape to the back patio for a smoke or the back room to play pool. They have a short menu of food items.

Located in Polk Gulch, The Red Devil Lounge hosts national name-recognition acts as well as local cover bands. It's a newer club, having been active for only 10 years. There is VIP Seating with bottle service if you contact the club ahead of time to reserve your seat. They don't have food service, however it is surrounded by a great amount of popular restaurants.

Located in the South of Market district, Slim's is a popular venue to see national and international touring artists. It has a short list of food items that you can order, but most of the shows are not seated. There are seats upstairs in the far back of the venue.
Primarily used as a dance club, it is located in the South of Market district, and it is the only club in San Francisco that webcasts everything from the sound system and its 10 cameras for you to watch and hear on your computer. Food service available.
DJ and touring acts play at Mighty
The Hotel Utah Saloon is South of Market and has nightly performances in an intimate setting with limited seating. There's an upstairs and downstairs, plus a bar area to hang out when bands are not performing. It has a very popular open mic night for any local acts looking to try out new material. Food service is available.

Located on the campus of University of California-Berkeley, this outdoor amphitheater is popular for major touring artists during the months of June-September. Food is served as well as limited alcohol. Dress in layers in case the air gets chilly after the sun goes down. It is accessible by BART with a short walking distance.
