Jewish heritage tour11 Jul 2008
Krakow is a city that boasts of rich Jewish heritage. It is thought to have been the cultural centre of European Jews in the past. Although the WWII and Holocaust ended this multi-cultural period of Krakow, there are still places and monuments that remind of its former citizens. Especially known for Jewish heritage is Kazimierz district - at the beginning separate town and later on Jewish quarter of Krakow - where most of Krakow Jews lived. The district - not long ago devastated and forgotten - revives its character. Apart from newly renovated synagogues - that withstood the war period - there are many places (such as hotels, restaurants and cafes) that gain Jewish ambience and nostalgy over the past. Second part of the tour logically or by choice needs to be Podgorze - where during the WWII Jewish ghetto was formed. Although there are almost no signs of the former function of this place, it is worth visiting places where the remnants of the ghetto wall are situated and the Schindler's factory - thanks to whom many of lives were saved. Having seen where life of Krakow Jewish citizens began, where they were condemned to live during the WWII one might be interested in visiting Auschwitz (only 1,5h outside Krakow by public transport) where the Nazi politics brought them.
