Most people go on a cruise and miss out on the onshore gems like these.
But here´s a list of things to do as a couple to paint the town red.

1. New Years Eve fireworks along the Valparaiso Coast, Chile.
Bring in the New Year with fireworks on a South American sandy beach at midnight. Get up early and stake out a place somewhere along the coast of Valparaiso or Vina Del Mar. At exactly midnight, the sky explodes in the biggest fireworks displayed in all Latin America. But book accommodation way in advance because it gets packed.
2. La Sebastiana (Pablo Neruda's House)
Visit Chilean poet Pablo Neruda´s house where he wrote all those famous love poems. Tuesdays to Sundays, 10.10 AM to 6 PM, CP$2.500 per adult. Down Ferrari on Bella Vista hill.
3. Festival Del Huaso (Chilean traditional Cowboy Festival)
A popular festival in Valparaiso´s neighbouring town Olmue honouring the native Chilean cowboy (huaso) on the 23, 24 25th Jan. Includes performances by well known singers, folkloric dancers and this year, the Valpo University Philharmonic Orchestra. (Spanish website)
4. Flower Clock (Reloj de Flores) and Antique Market
If you like perusing flea markets for antiques and collectables, Vina Del Mar holds a large outdoor fleamarket right in front of the main flower clock tourist spot in ¨Las Salinas¨ on Sundays and public holidays. 10am to 5pm.
5. Horse Carriage Rides, Vina Del Mar.
See the city lights in an old style horse carriage called ¨Las Victorias¨ along Plaza Vergara and Plaza Colombia in Vina del Mar. short ride CLP6000 or long ride CLP
Take a stroll on the wharf and check out the catch before dining in one of the many restaurants with a view overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Caleta Higuerilla Av. Borgoño,Viña del Mar Chile
7. Small Easter Island Moai, Vina del Mar
See a smaller scale authentic Moai statue from Easter Island on the coast along Avenida España just before Amunategui.

9. La Piedra Feliz (The Happy Stone) Salsa Club
Go for a salsa dancing lesson: at salsa club La Piedra Feliz. The fun starts at 10pm on Thursdays. Errazuriz 1054, Valparaíso. Ph:(32)256788
10. Mirador Lobos Marinos (Sea Lion Lookout)
Take a hike..literally.. out on the rocks on the coastal road linking Reñaca and Concón at the Mirador Lobos Marinos (Sea Lion Lookout) where you might meet some local sea lions. It is not easy but it´s worth it. Avenida Borgoña Viña del Mar Chile Open all year round.
