Don't panic, you can pack a lot in two days, if you do your homework. I chose not to go to any of the summer palaces and parks in the suburbs. There is so much the city has to offer!

The art collections are enormous and cannot be covered in a short visit. Do as I did, pick just one area of interest, be it Italian or Prehistoric art. Don't miss the opulent state rooms of the Winter Palace.
This is one of the world's largest cathedrals. Read a booklet or take a guided tour. It has a facinating history.
Take a stroll from the Admiralty to the Fontanka. Pay attention to to striking facades in styles ranging from Baroque to Style-Moderne. There are tons of interesting shops and cafes.
Don't miss this magnificent statue, it's only steps from St Isaac Cathedral. It took 12 years to finish it!
Finally restored after years of neglect and restoration, this church is magnificent. Inside, colorful mosaics show scenes from the New Testament.
Forget Amsterdam! The waterways of St P are amazing. Take a water taxi or cruise boat to explore Neva and canals. Each bridge is a work of art, and the canals wind past splendid mansions and palaces.
Its history is amazing and gruesome. The cathedral has the tombs of the Romanov family.
