I haven't seen most of the world, but I have seen some breathtaking, awe-inspiring sights. These are some of my favorites. Most have brought tears to my eyes.
1. Grand Canyon National Park
The sheer size of this canyon is what is so incomprehensible. Even when you stand on the edge of the south rim, directly staring its vastness in the face, it seems that the canyon is still a figment of your imagination. There is no way to describe the silent, looming beauty of the Grand Canyon.
There's something so sacred and peaceful about this abandoned city in the tops of the Andes. You feel like you could soar with the birds.
Seeing St. Basil's was a dream of mine since I was 12 that I was able to realize at age 22. It was a very happy day.
Is this place for real? I could spend days here. My imagination worked overtime as I pictured myself among the ancient inhabitants going about my daily business, a temporary citizen of Rome.
I grew up in the Wasatch range of the Rocky Mountains, so I am no stranger to mountains, but my mountains can't even compare to the dramatic Alps.
I am not a student of art history, though I appreciate art as much as the next guy. Like every other person in the world, I'd seen countless pictures of the David, but I wasn't prepared for my reaction to seeing it in person. With every curve you could see the care Michelangelo put into his masterpiece. There were hundreds of people around me, but that didn't stop the tears. No man could create that without the help of God.
Standing on the edge of the Cliffs and looking straight down into the ocean was a very exhilarating (and terrifying) moment.
8. Colosseum (Colosseo)
I may not be a student of art, but I am a lover of all things Roman and seeing the Colosseum was the pinnacle of my exploration of ancient Rome. I stood where the gladiators stood, I walked where the emperors walked. What a memory.
Just like every other hard core Beatles fan, Abbey Road was on my list. I spent hours with a friend trying to get the perfect (and cheesy) reenactment photo. It was well worth it. I love the Beatles.
10. Mesa Verde National Park
How DID they do that?
11. Hana
I know I said ten, but I can't leave out Hana. Hana and the road leading to it are everything I imagined an island paradise to be from the rickety bridges to the hidden waterfalls.
