Looking for a day trip to Maine? This is definitely my favorite. Fit in as much as your can and feel free to go off course and explore!
You may have such a good time, you'll need to find a room for the night.

| Tons of sauces, jams, spices, cooking equipment. Try some samples, pick a few favorites, grab a coffe at the cafe, and hit the road again. |

| Has to be one of the most photographed lighthouses in New England. Snap some photos of the lighthouse, the ocean and the crashing waves. If the ice cream shop is open down the road, grab a cone on your way in or way out... |

| Next drive up the back roads of Cape Neddick into Ogunquit. The road rides along the rocky coast for a little while. Great views. The road eventually turns residential. Park somewhere in Ogunquit center. |

| Once you find your way to Marginal Way, you'll know why I suggested it. Stunning, stunning views. The walk is great exercise. Bring a set of binoculars to check out the views. Bring a couple drinks and some snacks and pull up on one of the benches or sit on the rocks to take in the scenery. Very romantic! |

| If you start out in Ogunquit Center, it brings you to a tiny little place called Perkins Cove. Most places are closed off season here, but during summer months this place is packed with shoppers and art gallery lovers. |

| Ogunquit Beach is a beautiful! Worth a quick stroll to soak up the Maine coast atmosphere. During the winter dogs are allowed, so bring Fido with you if you want! |

Great place to buy fresh lobsters and seafood. We bought lobsters here one day to cook at our cottage. I have to say it was by far the best lobster I've had ever. Usually lobster is lobster right? But this lobster was so fresh and sweet, you didn't even need any butter!
They can also cook up lobsters for you and eat at one of their picnic tables. They also serve lobster rolls and chowder, etc...Right on the ocean. The hussle and bussle of Rt 1 seems like a million miles away. |

11. Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge
|
|
| If you're in for the long haul, then try to get over to the wildlife refuge for a hike. If not cut it out of this trip, but save it on your list of to do's for the next trip. |

If it's off season, Maine Diner is a great place to go cause it's always open.
Top choices are: breakfast - sausage, gravy and biscuits. lunch or dinner - lobster roll called the dale arnold (no mayo, served with drawn butter). don't forget to try a cup of their famous clam chowder or seafood chowder. Fried seafood or the lobster pie are also great choices! |

Good selection of shops. Not sure if it's still open, but good food store that had tons of hot sauces. Town is great for a stroll. |

| If you still have energy, continue on a scenic drive up to Walker's Point to see the Bush family compound. There are very nice scenic views on this drive. |

| If you're into antiques and can work it into your trip, you'll be happy at the amount of shops. This site has a good list of antique stores. |

There is a plethora of restaurants in this area and of course Maine is known for it's lobster! But if you like a good steak, head over to the Steakhouse. We've never been dissappointed with a meal. However, plan to wait. This place is so popular, the wait can sometimes be two hours during peak dining hours. So plan to go early around 5 or after 8. There is a nice waiting area where you can get drinks. They also have good seafood, so try a surf and turf if you want. This isn't gourmet fare, it's meat, seafood and potatoes. So if you like more upscale, head down to Ogunquit or up to Kennebunkport.
It's been a long day, probably time to head home! |
