2009 Marco Island - What Does MarcoRed Tell His Friends - Top Ten - Nature

6 Jun 2009  Enjoying the beauty and majesty of SW Florida
4.5 of 5 stars based on 4 votes

I was just asked by a friend to provide a few Marco Island Florida activities since they are traveling down to Marco. This is what I provided them.

  • Category: Best of
  • 1. Jetski

Jet ski into the 10,000 islands (rent from the beach at Marriott or
Hilton) Take an eco-tour and see why Marco Island is the largest of the 10,000 Islands.

  • 2. See the Bald Eagle pairs or Eagles nest

The "Tract K" eagles nest is the size of a small car. The nesting pair had 2 eaglets in 2009. The Bald Eagle nesting season typically starts October 1 and continues through May 15 or whenever the young are fledged.

  • 3. See the Osprey or Osprey nests

They are all around Marco, but go to Route 92 (towards Miami over Goodland Bridge) and don't go any further than Route 41 you will see dishes (yes like a satellite dish) on top of the telephone poles and see the Osprey.

  • 4. Kayak
    http://www.saltwatersportsflorida.com/capri.htm

We kayaked from Isles of Capri for 3 hours... around Johnson Island, then taking a break on a sandy point West of Johnson Island ... didn’t make it out to Keewaydin island ... but you can. We left from the Capri Fish house restaurant. Yes a restaurant.

  • 5. Calusa Shell Mounds

Calusa Shell Mounds - See the "oldest evidence of civilization in North America" - go to Indian Hill (Estates Area) or Key Marco - it is a gated community, Calusa is the name of the extinct Indian tribe. The highest point in Southwest Florida (51 feet).

  • 6. Tigertail

Tigertail Beach - $8 parking fee for sun and fun, park way .. way ... on
the left when you come through the gate to get away from people and miss
wading into the mud of the lagoon. Shelling, Shelling, Shelling.

  • 7. Rookery Bay Estuary

Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve - Off Marco - 2 miles on
    Route 951

  • 8. Everglades

Everglades airboat in Everglades City (EC) 30 minutes from
Marco, OR National Park Boat Tour from Everglades City at the "Everglades
National Park Gulf Coast Visitor Center", OR Shark Valley Tram - 1+ hours
    from Marco.

    Do a Board Walk
    - Fakahatchee Strand - Big Cypress Bend Boardwalk The walk itself is about a
    half-mile each way
    - Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve its half-mile boardwalk
    - Collier-Seminole State Park - 0.9-mile interpretive boardwalk/nature
    trail

    Or go hiking
    1) Tigertail to Hideaway Beach – Florida Bird trail - On Marco Island
    2) Rookery Bay – Shell road - Boardwalk Trail, Land Trails at the Briggs Nature Center. Right off Marco Island
    Trails Through Time...
Located near the end of Shell Island Road, the Trails Through Time is a series of three trails each approximately ¼ mile long. Botanical signage has been installed along the trails to assist visitors in identifying the various native trees and ecosystems.
    Shell Mound Trail
This trail was designed and constructed by RBNERR through a collaborative effort with Collier County Public Schools. It follows a mangrove fringing shoreline adjacent to pre-Calusa historical sites and an active habitat restoration project. Through self-guided interpretive signs, visitors can learn about pioneers who previously lived in the Rookery Bay area, and the role the local community played in establishing the Reserve.
    Monument Point Trail
This trail is linked to the Shell Mound Trail, providing visitors with access to Henderson Creek and the Children's Monument. The monument serves as a historical tribute recognizing the efforts of school children involved in helping to raise initial funds for purchasing core lands around Rookery Bay in the 1960's.
    Cat Claw Trail
This trail was designed and constructed by RBNERR in collaboration with Collier County Audubon Society, The Conservancy of Southwest Florida and Friends of Rookery Bay. The trail follows a natural storm berm that traverses through a tropical hardwood forest, and provides excellent views of fringing red mangrove and black mangrove forests.

  • 10. Marco Island Sunset

See a Marco Island Sunset. There is nothing like a Gulf sunset. The sunset's
never look the same. Hear the claps on the beach as the sun disappers. Immediately after it leaves the horizon do you see the green flash?
