Beer in Rome

12 Jul 2009  Beer traveler and craft beer lover
4.0 of 5 stars based on 7 votes

A short list of places to buy and drink craft beer in Rome. Italy has a new craft beer scene and brewers are still developing an identity for Italian beer. Beers in a Belgian style are common, but German, British, and American influence is clear. The best brewing is found near Milan, but some of the products make it to Rome.

  • 1. Ma che siete venuti a fa
Ma che siete venuti a fa, Rome, Lazio

This bar, commonly called the "Futbol Pub" for the futbol decoration on the walls, is the best beer bar in Rome. Manuele runs the bar with enthusiasm and an extensive knowledge of beer. The selection is mostly Italian, German, and Belgian. I found a Cantillon on draught that I have never seen anywhere else, and there were lots of bottled lambics as well. This bar has a fun, party like atmosphere. It should not be missed by any beer traveler. Manuele is also one of the owners of the Bir & Fud restaurant across the street.

John runs the two best bottle shops in Rome; Off-License being one of them. John took the time to give me a seminar on Italian beer. The selection is the largest I found in two weeks in Italy, and there are Italian craft beers available here that are very difficult to find anywhere else in central Italy. There are also good selections of Belgian, German, and English beer. Prices are generally low. This is the best shop for off-license beer in Rome.

  • 3. Bir & Fud
    Bir & Fud, Rome, Lazio

A restaurant known for serving craft beer and high quality bar food. The pizza was one of the best I had anywhere. The beer selection is extensive, with rare Italian draught beers and lots of bottled products. Bir & Fud is a high quality dining experience, and a visit here should be combined with Ma che siete venuti a fa the same evening.

  • 4. Off-License

This shop is also owned by John of Johnny's Off License. The selection here is also very good, and a beer traveler should be sure to make it to one of these shops.

  • 6. Aumm Aumm

Aumm Aumm is only steps from the Pantheon. It is run by Claudio, a Naples native who offers friendly service. A balanced Italain and Belgian selection. They also serve sandwiches and light snacks. A traveler is bound to be in the area, Aumm Aumm is worth a look.
