We spent a week in Costa Rica, and here is our itinerary/favorites.
We spent half of our trip exploring the beaches, restaraunts, and bars of Tamarindo. Unfortunateley it rained for most of our time here, but we still enjoyed exploring.
We didn't choose this destination, as we were here for a wedding. But we enjoyed. There was a lot of construction going on. But is great for surfing, socializing, and enjoying the beach. If you are looking for a quiet getaway thou, you might want to try one of the nearby towns.
I highly recomend taking a trip up to La Fortuna/Arenal. We debated how to spend our week, and are glad we chose to spend half the time by the volcano. It was the highlight of our trip, as there is a lot of things to do. We hired a transfer to drive us from Tamarindo to Arenal, and think this was the best way to do it as the roads were a bit treacherous. Also our driver pointed out animals, a magnetic field, and great picture spots.

Great value hotel. Was very nice, and perfect for exploring. Also the front desk was able to set up all of our excursions.
We went to the hot springs the night we arrived in La Fortuna. Was a good time to go since it wasn't too crowded and was very relaxing. Also, we really only needed a couple hours here, and left the rest of our days for activities.
Went repelling with the tour company, and was a highlight of our trip.
We hired a taxi to take us over the volcano at night. It was a great experience to see the lava. It happened to be a lightening storm at the same time, and was unbelievable. Worth taking a trip up
