Greatest things on Folegandros Island!

  • Category: Best of
  • Traveler type: Sightseeing, Active/Outdoors, Never been before, Repeat visitors, Beachgoers
  • Appeals to: Couples/romantics, Honeymooners, Singles, Families with small children, Families with teenagers, Seniors, Students, Budget travellers , Active/adventure, Tourists
  • Seasons: Spring, Summer, Fall
  • 1. The Kastro

The beautiful central section of the old town of Chora, the most beautiful and atmospheric of all the Cycladic towns (in my opinion!). Full of old houses and quaint scenes, the best spot for wandering and soaking up the loveliness of the island!

  • 2. Easter in Folegandros

The most amazing festival on the island, lasts from Good Friday until Easter Tuesday. The locals open their houses to everyone and give out free food, sweets, and drinks as the ancient icon of the Virgin passes from one house to the next. Lots of fireworks and dancing, and it all culminates with a free boat ride around the island! Book well in advance if you want to come as the tiny island gets a lot of visitors for this holiday.

  • 3. Beaches reached from Ano Meria

There are several remote beaches, all reached on foot from Ano Meria, which are beautiful, clean, and fun to walk to. Livadaki, Ambeli, and Agios Georgios are three of them. Get a good map and bring your swimsuit!

  • 4. Kyria Eirini's Mini Market

This restaurant, in Ano Meria, is half restaurant and half mini market, but the food is excellent! Kyria Eirini stays open year round and cooks the best food on the island. There are usually only one or two dishes on offer, so don't be picky.

  • 5. Panagia Church

Walk up from Pounta in Chora to the Panagia Church. The walk is lovely with great views and photo opportunities all the way up. Wander around the church yard and spot bits of ancient carved marble, a statue base with an inscription and bronze footprints, and more. Keep walking up to find the site of the ancient city (nothing but scant remains now).

  • 6. Folklore Museum in Ano Meria

Learn about the way things were in the well presented Folklore Museum, which is also beautifully located at the narrowest point on the island, affording splendid views toward Chora on one side and Agkali on the other.

  • 7. Local food

The food in Folegandros is uniformly good. Make sure to try matsata, the local pasta, and local cheeses and honey - all delicious!
