China is ancient and modern, something in between. It shimmers with unique sights, customs and cultures. And it's so vast! For my first visit I will not venture to Tibet or the Yangtze River. I've picked these eight cities for now. Just to scratch the surface.

I will take a cable car ride to Victoria Peak to see a panoramic view of the city, check out Stanley Market and jump on the Star Ferry to Kowloon. There is the Big Buddha statue and interesting monasteries on Lantau Island nearby. |

| The Lee River with the exquisite landscapes of limestone peaks is one of China's most beautiful landscapes. |

| There is so much to see there - the Bund, Yu Gardens and, of course, more parks and temples. |

| I'll take a relaxing cruise on West Lake and marvel at tranquil gardens and reflecting pools. |

| This is a real archeological treasure trove with its terra-cotta warriors and horses. |

The Forbidden City and Summer Palace, the Great Wall and Ming Tombs are a must. Beijing's old city, Hutongs, is well preserved and also worth a visit. |

| Not far from Beijing, there is a magnificent imperial park and impressive temples - the mountain resort of Chengde. |
