Places I stayed and visited on a solo hiking trip around southern Utah's National Parks

  • 1. McCarran International Airport
McCarran International Airport, Las Vegas, Nevada

Flew into McCarran from the UK, jumped in my rental car and off I went into the desert!

  • 2. Travelodge Hurricane Zion National Park Area
Travelodge Hurricane Zion National Park Area, Hurricane, Utah
    Show Prices
    Avg price: $107

Stayed here for 4 nights whilst exploring Zion National Park and the surrounding area.

  • 3. Zion National Park
    Zion National Park, Utah

3 days here was just enough for me to fit in all the hikes on my list; Angel's Landing, The Narrows, Observation Point, and plenty more. The dirt road to La Verkin Overlook is a must for sunset, and the view from the old Fire Tower on the Kolob Terrace road is expansive.

  • 4. Grand Canyon North Rim
Grand Canyon North Rim, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

Moved on from Hurricane heading towards Monument Valley. Stopped off at Grand Canyon's North Rim and hiked around for 2 or 3 hours before continuing on the road.

  • 5. Hat Rock Inn
Hat Rock Inn, Mexican Hat, Utah

Stayed for 1 night as The View Hotel was fully booked. Nice little hotel and only 20 minutes or so from Monument Valley itself, my next stop. Mexican Hat Rock itself is just the other side of town and well worth the 10 minute detour down the dirt road.

  • 6. Navajo Spirit Tours
Navajo Spirit Tours, Monument Valley, Utah

Took a full day tour of Monument Valley & Mystery Valley with the very friendly and knowledgeable folk from Navajo Spirit Tours. In my opinion this is the only way you should consider seeing this area. Superb.

  • 7. The Virginian Motel
    The Virginian Motel, Moab, Utah

Stayed for 3 nights in this comfy hotel located in the fantastic town of Moab. The best base for exploring the rich scenery of the area.

  • 8. The Needles
The Needles, Canyonlands National Park, Utah

About 70 miles to get to from Moab, some fantastic scenery but allow a full day if you're wanting to do much hiking.

  • 9. Dead Horse Point State Park
Dead Horse Point State Park, Moab, Utah

Only a tiny little State Park but if you're going to The Island in the Sky, this is on the way. Either way, this is one view not to be missed. Simply breathtaking.

  • 10. Island in the Sky
Island in the Sky, Canyonlands National Park, Utah

Great views, a new perspective on space and some of the best hiking on my trip so far. Allow a full day and set off on the Lathrop trail - descend 2100ft down a VERY steep rockslide and work your way towards the Colorado River.

  • 11. Arches National Park
Arches National Park, Arches National Park, Utah

Be prepared for the crowds! Some fantastic arches to be seen - Delicate arch being the most famous.

  • 12. Corona Arch
    Corona Arch, Moab, Utah

It's well worth taking half a day for a leisurely drive down the scenic potash road just outside of Moab, especially as the hike to Corona Arch is greatly rewarding, not to mention much quieter than Arches park! Excellent views from the arch too.

  • 13. Howard Johnson Capitol Reef
Affordable Inn of Capitol Reef, Torrey, Utah
    Show Prices
    Avg price: $102

Like an oasis, this fantastic hotel was the most memorable for me, simply because of the views from the veranda and the way I was greeted when I walked in. Stayed for 2 nights.

  • 14. Capitol Reef
Capitol Reef, Capitol Reef National Park, Utah

Overlooked by many people, this park offers some fantastic sights and brilliant hikes. Stop off in the historic Fruita district and pick your own fruit straight from the tree! Cohab Canyon is a fantastic hike, and well worth the 20 minute or so steep initial climb. Spent 2 days in total here, and managed to fit everything in I wanted to see. Any longer would have been a waste I think.

  • 15. Circle D Motel
    Circle D Motel, Escalante, Utah

Pretty basic but there's not a great deal to choose from in this area. Stayed for 2 nights. The Circle D eatery is a different matter - amazing food and great service. Try one of the Utah Beers they serve - Devastator is highly recommended.

  • 16. Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument
Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, Utah, United States

This area is simply huge, and it would take way too much time to try and explore it fully. Make sure you have a 4WD if you're wanting to get to some good trailheads, my 2WD might have done the job if there hadn't been loads of rain the day I arrived.

  • 17. Bryce Canyon Inn
    Bryce Canyon Inn, Tropic, Utah
    Show Prices
    Avg price: $239

Stayed in a fantastically cosy log cabin here for 4 nights to bring my trip to an end. Best night's sleep I had all trip.

  • 18. Bryce Canyon
Bryce Canyon, Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah

Nothing prepares you for the sight of Bryce's Amphitheatre. I visited early October and there was a very light sprinkling of snow, it was cold and there was a very strong wind. Still had an enjoyable day hiking around the amphitheatre. One day is easily enough to see Bryce though, any longer and you'd be re-tracing your steps.

  • 19. Kodachrome Basin State Park
Kodachrome Basin State Park, Cannonville, Utah

Not too far from Tropic, maybe an hour's drive at most down a winding back road is a little gem of a state park. You can do most of the trails here all in one day.

  • 20. McCarran International Airport
McCarran International Airport, Las Vegas, Nevada

Back to the airport and home after 2 and a half weeks of pure joy!
