2.5 of 5 stars based on 3 votes

If I were going to spend a week in Micronesia, I would like this to be my itinerary for a week-long trip.

  • Explore locations featured in this Trip List: Colonia, Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, Kosrae
  • Category: Perfect week or more
  • Appeals to: Couples/romantics, Honeymooners, Singles, Students, Active/adventure, Tourists
  • Seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall
  • 1. Day 1: Manta Ray Bay Hotel
Manta Ray Bay Resort, Colonia, Yap

Located right on the lagoon, this hotel is ideal for divers who come to see the famous manta rays and other marine life in the area. Dive equipment and instruction are offered nearby for all levels and there are numerous sights in the area, including the manta ray “cleaning stations” and some exciting shark lookouts. You can also relax at one of the hotel bars and enjoy a bottle of Manta Ray beer, the hotel’s own microbrew.

  • 2. Yap
    Yap, Federated States of Micronesia

The state of Yap offers plenty to do for anyone looking for an active vacation. From hiking the ancient stone paths and mountain biking on land to diving and deep sea fishing in the clear waters, you can find any number of adventures. The beaches are fantastic for relaxing and sun tanning, as well.

  • 3. Day 2: Sunset Park
Sunset Park, Yap, Federated States of Micronesia

The amazing views of the sunset on the Philippine Sea are what give this park its name. It is located close to the stone paths of Kaday Village where you can watch traditional dance or see one of Yap’s famous stone money banks with the enormous circular currency.

  • 4. Ethnic Art Institute of Micronesia
The Ethnic Art Institute of Micronesia, Yap, Federated States of Micronesia

With faithful creations of traditional men’s meeting houses, carving houses and cooking houses, this institute is an excellent place to discover the indigenous customs, arts and crafts of Yap.

  • 5. Day 3: Chuuk
    Chuuk, Federated States of Micronesia

Lush vegetation, rare migratory bird life and exquisite diving make the many islands of Chuuk state incredible to visit. Travel from one island to another in an ocean kayak, visit some of the relics of the Second World War or camp in the high hills to observe the rare birds. The most popular attraction is of course the diving. Beyond the colorful schools of fish and varied marine life in the lagoon, the area is also home to a number of immense shipwrecks, including an entire fleet of Japanese war ships.

  • 6. Ghost Fleet of Truk Lagoon
Truk Lagoon, Chuuk, Federated States of Micronesia

There is no more exciting shipwreck diving in the world than you will find in Truk Lagoon. A 1944 air assault upon the Japanese army by American forces has left somewhere between fifty and sixty downed ships as well as the remains of hundreds of planes resting undisturbed at the bottom of the lagoon. Over the decades the immense vessels have evolved into shipreefs with brilliant hard and soft corals intermingled with intact war relics.

  • 7. Day 4: All day boat tour of Nan Madol
Nan Madol, Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia

These ruins of a mysterious ancient city in the state of Pohnpei are one of the historic wonders of the world. The large basalt slabs that construct the fortress and steps are said to have been brought to the island by raft or by magic. Archaeologists have much to learn about the civilization that built this immense temple.

  • 8. Day 5: Liduduhniap Twin Waterfalls
Liduduhniap Falls, Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia

These spectacular waterfalls along the Nanpil River are a beautiful place to relax or go for a swim in the pool at the base of the falls. Nearby Kolonia is home to the remains of a Spanish fort.

  • 9. Day 6: Kosrae
    Kosrae, Federated States of Micronesia

The least developed state of Micronesia is home to the Lelu Ruins, large basalt channels and tombs dating back to the 13th century, as well as uncharted rainforest and a large, community-based nature preserve. You can go diving, relax on unspoiled beaches or explore one of the islands sites of natural wonder and legendary significance, such as the Wiya Bird Cave, a large cave filled with thousands of Resident Island swiftlet birds and fabled home to a family of giants.
