Best kept secret of the South Strand

3 Jun 2006  Moving to Pawleys Island from Virginia Beach just two years ago, I thought I would miss living in a large city location. It took a while, but now I fully appreciate the small town feeling, have lots of things to do and traffic jams are never a problem.

When people think of the Grand Strand, most limit themselves to Myrtle Beach. But if you go just 30 miles south, you will find a little bit of heaven on the South Strand away from the hustle & bustle of Myrtle Beach.

  • 1. Pawleys Island
    Pawleys Island

Tired of the busy, crowded beaches of Myrtle Beach, Pawleys Island has something worth the trip. Just over the North Causeway in Pawleys Island (Walgreens at corner) you will find a great beach on the south end of the island with ample parking and no wall to wall crowds. Take a picnic and any beach items you will need since there are no stores here. Just the sound of the waves and birds overhead.

  • 2. The Hammock Shops

Located just a little past the Pawleys Island Post Office (right side going south) this wonderful collection of shops (located on the left) is where you can stroll around through more than 20 unique shops to buy something great to take home. This is where you can buy an original Pawleys Island Hammock. There is also a great place for lunch called Roz's Rice Mill Cafe.

    Avg price: $43

This is a known fact for those of us who live here. Pawleys Plantation has the best Sunday Brunch in this area. ($14.95) It is open to the public. Come hungry, you won't regret it. Located about 8 miles south of Brookgreen Gardens on the left across from Nissan Dealership.

  • 4. Take two- consignment shop

This upscale consignment shop has high quality items from furniture to knick knacks. If you are looking for something, but don't want to pay full price, this is well worth the stop. Just a few hundred yards past Austins Restaurant. Both on the right hand side.

  • 5. Georgetown
    Georgetown

Just about 10 miles south of Pawleys Island is the town of Georgetown. A fishing village with a main street that runs parallel to a small boardwalk where you can spend some time looking through the shops, eating in one of the restaurants along the water or taking a historic trolley tour around town. Try the Rice Paddy on Front Street for lunch. It's great. Or the River Room if you want to look at the water as you dine. Watch for the Kangaroo Gas station on the left after coming over the bridges. You will be making a left. Go down til you come to Front Street. Make a right.
