1. Fort DeSoto Park

My boyfriend and I love camping here, and I've camped at Fort Desoto many times with my family. You can choose the perfect waterfront campsite online surrounded by trees and blooming hibiscus, for just $25 a night. I've watched dolphins at sunrise and spotted manatees munching lazily on greens while on a bike ride around a cove. You'll enjoy the 2005 top rated beach in the U.S. (as selected by Dr. Beach) or touring the old fort with the kids. Wide sidewalks are perfect for biking or rollerblading, and especially nice in the cooler months. Save even more money by cooking locally caught shrimp on the grill or preparing French toast outdoors in the morning. Nothing could be better--or less expensive. At Fort Desoto you'll enjoy the same waterfront views and brilliant starry nights that others pay far more for (or think of it as saving up for the nearby Don Cesar Hotel, a pink "castle" on the Gulf of Mexico). Fort Desoto is also ideal for fishing (watch out for sharks!) and kayaks can be rented on site for exploring the mangroves or open waters. Be active, be relaxed, whatever you choose.
2. Caladesi Island State Park

If you love pristine beaches, you should make the short drive from Fort Desoto to Honeymoon Island and take the ferry to Caladesi. Also, be sure to visit the charming little downtown of Dunedin. Take a picnic to the island or enjoy an inexpensive lunch at Kelly's for Just About Anything in Dunedin. The homemade chocolates in a little shop on Main Street are also worth a small splurge.
3. Canoe Outpost, Fort Desoto

If you're traveling from afar, you can still enjoy all the outdoor fun as Floridians. Simply rent a canoe, kayak or bicycle from a local outpost such as this one.
