A taste for every palate all on one Maine Street

4 Jun 2006  Brunswick SWF who would rather eat out than cook in the summertime heat
4.5 of 5 stars based on 3 votes

Brunswick, Maine is a New England college town (Bowdoin) on the coast of Maine. With one of the widest and prettiest main streets in new England, it is no wonder that it is lined with a tasty buffet of dining options! In the space of about 1/2 mile, visitors can find more than 20 different establishments to curb your hunger. Even this is not a complete list. I am leaving off a Dunkin Donuts, Domino's Pizza and a couple of newer spots that I have not tried yet.

14 Maine Street (Fort Andross), Brunswick, ME 04011
    Telephone (207) 725-9708 FAX (207) 725-9714

Anchoring one end of Maine Street in Brunswick is this flavorful Thai casual dining restaurant. Located in the historic Fort Andross, Bangkok Garden is a small restaurant that has been written up frequently and can boast multiple award wins for authentic cuisine.

  • 2. The Great Impasta (Italian)
    http://www.greatimpastarestaurant.com

No frozen fried mozarella sticks here! This traditional italian fare serves their fried mozarella as a fresh cut and breaded slab. Most noted for their garlic bread knots (which are highly addicting!) they have a great variety of food and a fair selection of wine pairings to complement your meal. And the desserts? Italian grandma's would be proud! Mangia!

  • 3. Shere Punjab (Indian)
    http://www.sherepunjabmaine.com

Indian hospitality welcomes you into this cozy nook. The smell of spice warms you form the inside out even before you eat a bite. I stopped in once for some take-out coconut soup and the owner insisted I sit for cup of sweet spiced tea while I waited. You can't beat that for being taken care of. Many coupons are available on their website as well as full menus and photos of vaious dishes.

  • 4. Big Top Deli
    http://www.bigtopdeli.com

A great breakfast or lunch spot food wise, but parking is a often scarce on the weekdays at lunchtime. The spot is frequented by the Navy air crews from the local base, it is one of the few places you see the boys out in uniformed groups. The food is fresh and menu large but not unwieldy. Meats and Cheeses can also be purchased. Menus are online and there are also daily specials on the big board

  • 5. Grand City

    Grand City - 128 Maine St - (207) 725-8964
A basic lunch counter in a classic Brunswick Five and Dime type store. You never know what you'll find in Grand City.

  • 6. Provisions
    http://www.provisionsbrunswick.com

    Provisions - 148 Maine Street, Brunswick - 729-9288
This is a great Brunswick find. Need something unique for a special ingredient? A unique choice to dress up a cheese plate? How about fresh artisan bread and a great wine selection? Provisions has it all. This is a great stop to pick up some staples and then head to brunswicks grassy mall area. The web site is still being built at this time, but check it anyway. Last I knew there were also monthly wine tastings that are a fun way to sample and find your new favorite from their collections.

  • 7. Broadway Deli

Broadway Deli. 142 Maine St, Brunswick, ME Tel: (207) 729-7781
Not much to say here. Booths and tables with a standard menu of well made basics.

  • 8. Rositas (Mexican)

    Rosita's Mexican Food
    212 Maine St
    Brunswick, ME 04011-2047
    (207) 729-711
Rositas is basic, hearty, delicious, no-frills mexican food. They only take cash and there is an ATM nearby if you are without. Cold beers are in the cooler and you order at the counter. The decor is campy comfort with tables if you are eating in, though I believe the bigger part of their business is take out. There are the mexican standbys of enchiladas, tostadas, burritos, tacos etc... There are also daily specials. One of my favorites of the recurring specials is a butternut squash and black bean burrito. The food comes at a great value thanks to the no-frills style.

  • 9. Scarlet Begonias
    http://www.scarletbegonias.org

At the Bowdoin College end of Maine Street is another small eatery that also does catering. My first experience with this place was a disappointment. I seem to remember thinking that I paid $8 for 4 leafs of Romaine and a 1/2 breast of chicken. Fortunately someone ordered Pizza from here at work one day. A great variety of gourmet pizzas (no processed pepperoni on this menu), pasta and sandwich selections has renewed my faith. I think they are BYOB too, but call to be sure.

  • 10. Morning Glory Natural Food

    Morning Glory Natural Foods - 60 Maine St - (207) 729-0546
A natural food store with some great snacking finds and fresh offerings in the cooler case near the door. Sandwiches and some soups usually available to grab and go. Try Little Lad's Herbed Popcorn too, you'll be hooked.

  • 11. Bohemian Coffee House
    http://www.bohemiancoffeehouse.com

Wireless Users are welcome, just make sure you are also endulging in a great cup of coffee or a sweet treat from the pastry case. They also have a number of frozen concoctions the tempt you with. Coffee is fresh roasted by Bohemian Coffee Roasters and the decor feels like a funky little deco place you would find in a mexican port town.

  • 12. Wild Oats Bakery and Cafe

    Wild Oats Bakery & Cafe - 149 Maine St - (207) 725-6287
Natural Foods, fresh soups and creative sandwich pairings make this a popular stop for locals. Pick up some fresh bread, cakes or other pastries to enjoy the Wild Oats fresh flavors at home.

  • 13. Bombay Mahal (Indian)

    Bombay Mahal - 99 Maine St - (207) 729-5260
Two Indian restaurants on this short Maine Street? Yes. Rumor has it that there was originally one (I'm not sure which one) owned and operated by two relatives. Somewhere along the line there was a falling out and now there are two. Prices and menu are comparable. I frequent this one more only because it is next to my hairdresser and a shorter walk from my house for take-out. There is also a lunch buffet on weekend for around $7.00. Traditional decor is inviting, but the heavenly smell is what really gets patrons in off the street.

  • 14. Little Dog Coffee Shop

    Little Dog Coffee Shop - 87 Maine St - (207) 721-9500
"Coffee, Tea, Internet and Comfortable Place to Relax on Maine Street" is what the owners say and I fully agree. Like Bohemian Coffee House, there is free wireless but little dog wins me over having more room to stretch out. Little Dog is a great spot to sit on a big couch and watch the Maine Street world go by from their huge front window. There is always a nice selection of sweets to satisfy that sweet tooth, as well as bagels in the morning and soups, panini, quiche and sometomes salads for a more substantial snack. The variety is not huge for those items, but what they do have is always flavorful and satisfying.

  • 15. Henry and Marty's

    Henry & Marty
61 Maine Street, Brunswick, Maine 04011
    Telephone (207) 721-9141
I have never been here but have heard such great things things about this place that I though a mention was worth while and you can google it for reviews since they do not have a website.

  • 16. Pedro O'Hara's
    http://www.pedrooharas.com

An Irish Mexican Pub? It works, and not just because of the pitchers of Margaritas. Pedro's is located under Richard's German Restaurant and takes advantage of it's basement setting. The decor is kitchy with chile pepper string lights and the colors you would expect in an atmospheric little cantina. The chimichangas are my favorite on the menu. Read the legend of Pedro O'Hara on the website.

  • 17. Richard's German American Restaurant

Richards Restaurant 115 Maine Street, Brunswick, ME 04011
Sure Maine has a number of Micro Brews to kill your thirst, but let's face it...the Germans have cornered the market on great beers. With traditional foods and sides, Richard's makes you appreciate that refreshing brew even more.

  • 18. Joshua's Tavern and Restaurant
    http://www.joshuastavern.com

Named after Maine's famous Civil War hero Joshua Chamberlain, the tavern on the street level is a popular choice for locals and visitors alike. It survived a fire a few years back and came back in force expanding soon after. Upstairs the restaurant is a little more low key but has great food and a deck for those sultry summer nights.

  • 19. The Summer Lunch Wagons

There is a Brunswick summer phenomenon out on the mall... at lunch time at least. Summer traffic is dicey on Maine Street during the tourist aden months anyway, but nothing slows you down like the mobs flocking to the lunch wagons. Danny's Hot Dogs is probably the most widely known, but over the years Danny had been joined by about 4 other portable business that roll in and out each night to the designated parking spots on the mall with their electrical hookups. On a hot day when the air is heavy and you can tell by the wafting air if the tide is in or out, nothing beats a meal in hand from one of the vendors on the mall and an ice cream across the street at the seasonally open Cote's Ice Cream.

  • 20. Cote's Ice Cream

Open only in the summer, you can find Cote's across from the mall gazebo. Just look for the line of drooling people. Forget Dairy Queen and Cold Stone, this is small batch made, super creamy, 100% calorie heavy goodness. With a variety of flavor combos including candy themes and Irish Cream Fudge Swirl, these hard serve treasures come with two challenges: Pick a flavor and don't let a drop hit the ground in the summer heat.

  • 21. Just off Maine Street Picks

here are a few that are just far enough off Maine Street to not make the list, but since they are also in walking distance, I thought I owed them at least a name mention.
