Italy: North of Rome

6 Feb 2013  some trips to Italy
3.5 of 5 stars based on 1 vote

This is a list of my favourites - not included as favourites although nice are: Asissi, Bologna, San Gimignano, Monterigioni, Greve in chianti, Radda in chianti, Colle di valle' d'elsa, cinque terre. There are also lots of places that I have not been to!.

  • 1. Rome
    Rome, Lazio

Justifiably on the top of every must see list. A taxi from the airport at sunset along the via Antica and around the historical monuments was better than could be hoped from any tour. i would recommend going this way rather than along the graffiti covered main route. The driver just happened to take this route. It is one of the most enjoyable cities to walk around. Stay as long as possible unless it is very hot weather.

  • 2. Orvieto
    Orvieto, Province of Terni

A very beautiful town with great views of the surrounding countryside. We got a train from Rome and hired a car here to drive to Tuscany. That worked out well.

  • 3. Siena
    Siena

The tower, the art, the Duomo, the streets are all beautiful. However it is a terrible town for those who have difficulty walking. You need a disabled sticker to get parking anywhere near the city centre attractions.

  • 4. Panzano
    Panzano

  • 5. Badia a Passignano
    Badia a Passignano

Possible the most beautiful view in a place chock-a- block with beautiful views. It is tiny. Nowhere was open for lunch the day we went but it would be an ideal spot. There was a place to go wine tasting so may be worth to plan a night here.

  • 6. Florence
    Florence

The highlight for me is climbing the Duomo. Get a ticket for the Uffizi the day before. There are lots of posts with advice on tripadvisor. Well worth a few days

  • 7. Lucca Italian School
LIS Lucca Italian School - Italian language, Lucca, Province of Lucca

They live up to the glowing reports that people posted on Tripadvisor. I did a week and enjoyed learning basic Itlaian but they cater for all levels. They also can organsie accomodation. i wanted to stay on for longer. Lucca is a lovely town to stay in and just a bus ride from Pisa and Florence. Lucca is a relatively flat town and so might suit some people with difficulty walking more than other Italian towns.

  • 8. Leaning Tower of Pisa (La Torre di Pisa)
Leaning Tower of Pisa (La Torre di Pisa), Pisa, Province of Pisa

Buy a ticket for going up the tower when you arrive. Then have a look around all of the buildings and relax until it is your time. Pisa town is nice enough. There are buses to many destinations, including a bus that goes from Lucca to the airport that passes by the leaning tower site.

  • 9. Lake Garda
    Lake Garda, Italy

I stayed in the Northern half. Everywhere was very pretty. There are lots of watersports for active people. Ferries and buses go to lovely villages around the lake. Its also nice to have a day out on the cable car up to the mountain. There are buses that return from the Opera in Verona to many of the towns on the lake.

  • 10. Verona
    Verona, Province of Verona

A visit for the Opera (maybe more than one) with some time to look around.

  • 11. City of Venice
    City of Venice
