  • 1. Bandipur

A Wildlife Santuary in the Mudumalai forests, between Mysore and Ooty, India.

Take off from Bangalore, early in the morning. The easiest and cheapest option is to go to the Kempegowda Bus Station and catch any bus bound to Ooty (or catch one bound to Mysore and catch another bus from Mysore). Tickets are dirt cheap and the buses are very comfortable. Journey of about 4-5 hrs.
Remember to book your guest house in Bandipur with the Forest Department, atleast two weeks in advance. These are difficult to get, but well worth the trouble. Nestled in the middle of the forest, it's an experience living there. With deer right outside your window, monkeys occasionally on your roof and elephants walking past, you're RIGHT THERE!! And rooms start from Rs.200!!! Meals are cooked and served in the guest house, and are cheap too.
A wildlife safari for... believe me, Rs.30 is a steal! It's a good 1-1.5 hr tour and the lucky ones see tigers too!!!
Top off the experience with a half hour elephant ride into the forest, for Rs50 if you're interested!
All in all, for less than Rs.500 (taxi fares in B'lore often top this nowadays) you can spend an idyllic weekend here!!!

  • 2. Ranganathittu

    A bird sanctuary near Mysore

Catch a bus back to Mysore from Bandipur (check for bus timings) and get off just before Mysore, to go to Ranganathittu. You'll see more birds here, than you've probably seen in your life. Have a picnic lunch, go out for a boat ride and enjoy your day in this haven! Beware however, do not get into the water, there are crocs here!

  • 3. Mysore
    Mysore, Karnataka

A historic city in Karnataka, couple of hours' drive from Bangalore

Top off the weekend with a different experience -after Nature, see history now! Don't think I need to say much about Mysore, a google search will give more than you can read, but this city in itself can take a whole week to see! But do catch a glimpse of it on your way back to top it off!!!
All in all, as little as Rs.700 you can spend an idyllic weekend you'll remember all your life!!!
