The best place to start planning your holiday is with a map so you understand the different regions and distances involved in planning an Alaskan vacation. This resource breaks information down by region, attractions, seasons and travel type. Also offers innumerable searchable links to useful sites and suggested itineraries for different length of stays. Useful information and tips on what you need for your trip.

  • 2. Alaska.org
    http://www.alaska.org

Travel advice from Alaska insiders. This site offers excellent information on popular destinations in Alaska. It gives you suggestions on how long to stay in each place and what to see and do while you are there. It also compares some popular destinations to help travellers decide if they have to make a choice of one or the other.
Information on transportation, travel times and distances plus various modes of transport available in each region is very useful.
Also available are some excellent travel planning tips covering a multitude of topics. Well worth reading and studying the information on this site to assist in your planning.
Just be aware that this site IS linked to a travel booking site so they do only promote operators that they book for.

  • 3. Trip Reports
    Alaska, United States

On the right of the forum list are some top questions about Alaska which are all worth reading as well as links to previous years trip reports. These can provide invaluable insights into places to visit and things to do as they are all compiled by travellers who have planned & undertaken their own unique Alaskan journeys then taken the time to share their experiences. It may help you narrow down what your own priorities are for your trip which in turn will assist in planning your itinerary to suit your timeframe.

  • 4. Alaskan Travel Specialists
    http://www.alaskarailroad.com

There are a couple that I found during my research that publish a multitude of itineraries for various types of travellers (independent, guided tours, rail tours, cruises and land/cruise options). Most of them I found from links in the State Planner listed above. You may choose to book with one of these companies for the ease of having everything organised for you or you may choose to book everything yourself using these as a guide. Either way, be sure to research your choices and ask specific questions on the forums if you feel you need further clarification.
Some of the most useful I found were:

    www.travelalaska.com
    www.alaskatours.com
    www.alaskarailroad.com

For both fully packaged tours and daytrip or transfer bookings.
Be aware that not ALL US based travel companies are able to book for non-USA citizens. This particularly relates to cruises but also to some other forms of travel.

  • 5. Traveller Articles
    Alaska, United States

There are people who have put a lot of time and effort into creating some great travel information and published it on Trip Advisor. They still continue to provide the same information in the forums so it's worth reading through some of these first as you may find the answer to your questions and more.......
