Slovenia is the ideal small country holiday spot. Everything is within easy driving distance and variety is enormous. One day you can hike the Julian Alps, the next explore the wondrous underground caverns of stalagtites and mites, follow up with a day boating on picturesque Lake Bled and then round up the week with a castle stay in an authentic ancient castle surrounded by a fantastic 18 hole golf course. Slovenia has something for the whole family. Our kids loved open day at Bled Castle perched on a craggy outcrop above the lake. The lord of the Manor welcomed visitors with a wonderful display of medievil dancing and an archery competition complete with costumed damsels, knights and jesters. The traditional boat rides in a Pletna on Lake Bled take you back in time to when man powered boating was the normal mode of transport. Be whisked across the lake to the magical mini island complete with ancient church and roman remains. Be decadent and indulge yourself with a piece of Bled Pie, a dizzying delight of puff pastry, fresh cream and more fresh cream. Perfect with a coffee while sitting watching the sun go down over the Alps. Walking trails and cosy pubs make hiking a pleasure and the food in Slovenia is wholesome and tasty. Service is amiable, tourists are welcomed and english is spoken by all of the younger generation and in most tourist centres. We found car hire inexpensive and Peugots were the most common hire car available. Driving in Slovenia is easy and well sign posted. This is the perfect country for a family holiday. The capital is also small, manageable and interesting. The kids again loved the castle and mum loved the shopping!

A medieval castle carved out of rock, hanging on the side of an immense cliff with a small medieval village at its feet.
