Best Night Spots in Boston

If you're in Boston for any amount of time, and you can afford to stay out late, these are the places you won't want to miss

  • 1. Whiskey's

Whiskey's is sure to be a good time any night of the week. The majority of the crowd consists of college kids and young professionals, but not the snooty type. There is no cover and drinks are relatively cheap. The bar is located in the middle with the dancing and lounging going on along the wide perimeter. Just a good time all around. My personal favorite. (885 Boylston St.)

  • 2. The Kells

The Kells attracts a lively crowd on a nightly basis, especially on the weekends. The space is separated into two rooms: one is more of a lounge area and the other is a dance floor. The Kells also conveniently serves up chinese food to satisfy those late night munchies. (Harvard St, Allston)

  • 3. Trinity

The name "Trinity" not only alludes to Boston's Irish-Catholic heritage, but also signifies the club's feature of having three floors, all offering distinct features. On the ground floor you will find yourself in a traditional sports-bar setting. The second floor often features live music (usually cover bands) as well as a full bar. If dancing is what you came for, Trinity's basement floor is where to find it. (Fanueil Hall)

  • 4. The Modern Lounge
    The Modern Lounge, Boston, Massachusetts

Known locally just as "Modern", this chic night spot caters mostly to the young professional and international student crowd. The drink menu includes a variety of martinis and other drinks of that ilk. Budget travelers might want to go some place else, as drinks are pricey. Neverhtheless, anyone can enjoy the energetic atmosphere brought on by the young type-A crowd. (Landsdowne St., found directly behind Fenway's left-field wall)

  • 5. Avalon

At Avalon you're in for a full-fledged dance party night-in and night-out. Avalon also features early evening entertainment some nights, offering great live music. Notable performers who have played there include The Disco Biscuits and Arctic Monkeys. (Landsdowne St.)

  • 6. The Paradise Rock Club
The Paradise Rock Club, Boston, Massachusetts

The Paradise attracts top acts in relation to its venue size. The audience is usually infused with energy, as its close location to Boston University attracts a mostly college-aged crowd. The Paradise has helped launched careers of some top artists, including Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers and the J. Geils Band. Recent and near-future performers range from Ghostface Killah to bassist Mike Gordon (formerly of Phish). Just as a reminder for those with kids, almost all shows are 18+. Also, make sure to remember your ID, as the Paradise has a stringent policy on under-age boozing.

  • 7. The Purple Shamrock
    The Purple Shamrock, Boston, Massachusetts

Classic Irish Pub, occasional live music and a generally upbeat atmosphere make The Purple Shamrock a great place to enjoy a pint.

  • 8. Jillian's Boston
Jillian's Boston - Lucky Strike Lanes - Lounge, Boston, Massachusetts

A chain, yes, but a top spot for those who enjoy some friendly competition and gaming in their nightlife. The three floor mega-gameroom/bar has everything from billiards to bowling, while also featuring a decent late-night dinner menu.

  • 9. The Rack
    The Rack, Boston, Massachusetts

Located across from Fanueil Hall, The Rack features a high quantity of pool tables (around 20) and dining service from 11-1. The star-struck types will enjoy the possibility of seeing Boston's top pro athletes, as they have been known to drop in periodically.

  • 10. Ned Devine's

Ned Devine's offers a wide variety of beers and is wide open for both lounging around and dancing. It is a bit touristy, but the infusion of college kids manages to give it a local feel. There is occasionally live music (cover bands mostly).
