Alternative Spring Break Destinations

Sure, the 24 hour party at Cancun is great, but some of us might prefer something a little more off the beaten path for our spring breaks.
1. Nepal
Nepal, Asia
You'll find plenty to do in Nepal, from trekking and mountaineering to exploring its history through taking in its many temples and other national landmarks.
2. South Africa
South Africa, Africa
Whether its taking in the fine wines or the natural wonders of this geologically rich country, or learning about its controversial history. South Africa will be a fulfilling experience.
3. Guatemala
Guatemala, Central America
Guatemala is not to be missed for the alternative spring breaker. It is extremely easy to travel the whole country by bus and lodging is very cheap. "Can't miss" locales are the pools at Simmuk Champee and the Tikal Ruins.
4. Prague, CZ
Prague, Bohemia
Take in this rich Bohemian city by visiting historic sites like the Jewish Quarter and Prague Castle and Hradcany.
5. Chile
Chile, South America
It would be impossible to cover all of Chile in just one week of spring break, but you are sure to find a lifetime of things to do by visiting just one region. If you're going in March, your best bet would be to explore the San Pedro Desert up north. Here you will find the magnificent creater, Valle de la Luna and you'll also encounter wild flamingos, along with many cultural experiences.
6. Israel
Israel, Middle East
While it's easy to be scared off by the way the media portrays things, Israel remains a magical place. People of many religions will encounter a spiritual experience here, whether its the Wailing Wall, the Dome of the Rock or Via Dolorosa. Aside from that, you will be blown away by the country's geography, whether you're hiking through the Negev Desert or taking in a beach along the Mediterranean.
7. Helping Katrina Victims in New Orleans

It's easier said than done to sacrifice a week of relaxation to offer community aid, but I'm sure your there are people who would be extremely grateful for your help. (http://www.vfp.org/)
8. Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee
Here you'll be swilling trail mix in lieu of margharitas. The Smokies offer up some of the most majestic images of North American nature out there. With it's rushing streams that bend through the forrest and the various different flowers you'll encounter along the way, as well as some harmless wild-life, hikers will find themselves in paradise.
9. Festival of Las Fallas in Valencia
Valencia, Valencia Province
This might not be alternative for European spring breakers, but I doubt many Americans will have experienced anything quite like it. Essentially, it is a commemoration of carpenter St. Joseph initiated by the letting off of thousands of fire crackers and ended by burning massive wooden statues that local carpenters had built starting in the beginning of the year.
