I spent 6 nights here. 3 were at the beginning, 3 were at the end. During the first stay, the experience was typically American and mundane. On the second stay, what was humdrum before, now was exceptional! What a difference a trek thru the Hungarian countryside can make.
Bliss!
Millenium memorial
This is one of the most beautiful attractions in Budapest.
5. Fisherman's Bastion (Halaszbastya)
On Castle Hill. See above.
6. Central Market Hall (Nagy Vasarcsarnok)
Some good shopping!
7. Margaret Island (Margitsziget)
Budapest's Central Park. It's located in the Danube in between Buda and Pest.
8. Chain Bridge (Szechenyi lanchid)
First bridge suspended across the Danube.
One of the largest baroque palaces in Hungary.
10. Holloko
From the UNESCO site: Hollokö is an outstanding example of a deliberately preserved traditional settlement. This village, which developed mainly during the 17th and 18th centuries, is a living example of rural life before the agricultural revolution of the 20th century.
Wonderful castle, evil staff.
I loved Eger! A charming town.
Good hotel
14. Valley of the Beautiful Women
Don't miss the trolley from Eger town square up to the wineries! And don't worry if you miss the first trolley back, you can stay a while and catch another one later. The Bikaver wine is worth it.
Very quaint area. They specialize in sweet white dessert wines.
16. Miskolc
Went to the Cave Bath here. Set in a touristy obnoxious water park, but a very cool experience anyway!
17. Debrecen
eh.

20. Villa Bodi, Satu Mare, Romania
A favorite hotel
Just a quick stop here. Very pretty.
Another favorite town. More liberal than other parts of Hungary.

Considered by some the most beautiful synagogue in Hungary.
Nice town, larger than most.

27. Lake Heviz
Worth the detour! Warm, soothing waters make up for the utilitarian environment.
28. Lake Balaton
Hungary's resort playland. Very touristy, but a nice lake for a hot summer day.
The peninsula is beautiful! Get here very early if you can, the town fills up quickly with tourists.
30. Estergom
The largest church in Hungary resides here. You can also cross the Danube to enter Slovakia here.
31. Visegrad
Pretty!
32. Danubius Spa & Conference Hotel Visegrad
Only had lunch here. Good food, and OMG, what a view!
33. Szentendre
Shopper's paradise in a pretty old town. You can take an hour long cruise back down the Danube to Budapest from here.
