Houseboating Vacation on Shasta Lake

25 Nov 2006  I was born and raised on/near/in Shasta Lake.
4.0 of 5 stars based on 4 votes

One of my favorite vacations is to rent a houseboat in low season and get away from the world.

  • 1. Shasta Lake
    Shasta Lake, California

Shasta is part of the "Three Shastas" Shasta Dam, Shasta Lake and Mt. Shasta. The lake is man maid and is fed by thee major rivers: the Pit, the Sacramento and the McCloud which make up the three "arms" of the lake. The water is great.

  • 2. Before you go - know the Rules!

Tooling about on the water is fun but with the fun comes responsibilities. You will be 'driving' a vehicle that has no brakes and is powered by an implement that can slice off a leg or arm. Know the rules and be safe.

  • 4. Rent a Houseboat!

The Cascade is perfect for two adults and two dogs. We like renting from Bridge Bay because they allow us to bring our dogs along and we have had very, very good experiences with them. We usually rent just after Labor Day when the weather is still good but the rates drop.

  • 5. Add some fun!

Bring or rent a ski boat. Bring or rent jet skis or other water toys.

Be sure you at least rent a small fishing boat so that you can park the houseboat and have something to get around in if you want to come into shore for dinner one night.

  • 6. Supply List

The houseboat rental will include most of what you need in equipment. See the websites for details. What you should bring: Linens, Towels, Pillows, Bedding or Sleeping Bags, Bath Soap, Shampoo, Cleaning Supplies, Paper Towels, Dishtowels, First Aid Kit, Gloves and Sturdy Shoes for mooring boat, Sweaters, Lounge Chairs, Bathing suits, Sunscreen, Insect Repellant, Music, Books, Games, Water Toys, Air Mattresses, Flashlights and Lanterns. You might want to bring an extra ice chest - because you can't have enough (block) ice. And of course: FOOD.

  • 7. Food List

Keep perishibles to a minimum and avoid frozen foods. The househboat's refrigerator will not be able to keep up on really hot days. You will need to buy lots of ice, mostly block ice (important). Plan on grilling: hamburger, chicken, steaks. Balance that with salads, but don't get fancy. Stay away from items with mayo ingrediants for fear of spoilage. Canned goods are great. Hard fruit like apples, corn on the cob, banannas, all good. Other items to remember: coffee, suger, salt/pepper, butter, salad dressing, bread, peanut butter, jam, cereal. Be sure to bring enough drinking water - minimum of 2qts per person per day - then drink it! The sun and heat can really dehydrate a person - especially if you are consuming alcohol.

  • 8. Bridge Bay Resort - Tail O' the Whale

Take your small boat to dinner. I've listed some choices.

  • 9. Lakeshore Resort - have a steak dinner

  • 10. Silverthorn Resort - Pizza and Pub

  • 11. Learn how to Waterski

Wakeboard Lessons - Wakesurfing Lessons - Waterski Lessons

  • 12. Go Fishing

Bring your fishing gear. You can pick up bait at any marina - be sure to get that license!

  • 13. Go Parasailing

Nothing like it! You don't have to know how to ski, although knowing how to swim is advisable!!!

  • 14. Visit Shasta Caverns

This is an amazing place to visit. You can take your ski boat or fishing boat right to the docks and then take the bus up the hill to the caverns. Have a real caving experience.
