2. Mangaweka Viaduct & Rangiwahia Dress Circle Reserve

Along the way enjoy the beautiful scenery from the Mangaweka Viaduct, and if you'd like to veer off route for a little bit, check out the Rangiwahia Dress Circle Reserve.

3. Intersection of Rangiwahia, Te Parapara and Ruahine Roads

At this junction you have the choice to continue along the route or divert into the small village of Rangiwahia for a bathroom break, rest stop or overnight camping. The historical tile display on the Rangiwahia Hall and the memorial are well worth a look, as is booking to see Ruapuna Park Gardens and Museum.

4. Michael Bourke's Wetlands

Explore nature's playland planted with all sorts of interesting trees, shrubs and flowers including water lillies, magnolias and cherry trees. Trout fishing is available here in the large and picturesque lake, providing you have a permit. There are plenty of birds and wildlife to experience. Free entry and open anytime.

This former Department of Conservation workers' base has now been transformed into budget accommodation offering an all-weather solution for travellers. If you'd still like to be outside, you can pitch a tent on the lawn and use the facilities inside. To book, go to www.doc.govt.nz.

7. Pilgrim's Rest Tea Rooms and Deer Park

Enjoy the peace and tranquility of the countryside and some of the most expansive views of the Pohangina Valley. Relax in the garden setting, watch the deer and choose either a ploughman's lunch, Devonshire Tea or a cool drink and ice cream. Bookings are essential. Telephone: +64 6 329 4705

8. Totara Reserve Regional Park

Totara Reserve is a 400ha bush area nestled in the Pohangina Valley. It is one of the best and most accessible remaining examples of the ancient forest that once covered much of the Region. There are a variety of long and short walks, and great camping facilities.

9. Raumai Reserve

Raumai Reserve is a scenic picnic spot right beside the river. It's a great spot for swimming and fishing. Picnic areas and public toilets are available.

Ashhurst is small town on the edge of Pohangina Valley, near Manawatu Gorge and Palmerston North City. Facilities include a petrol station, dairies, cafes, and a large and scenic domain.
